The 7th edition of the standard UL 60335-2-8, "Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, Part 2-8: Particular Requirements for Shavers, Hair Clippers and Similar Appliances," has been officially published. Concurrently, a new edition of CSA 60335-2-8 has also been released. The content of the new standards in both countries is identical, which facilitates manufacturers in selling their products to both the US and Canadian markets simultaneously. This standard applies to products such as shavers, hair clippers, and animal clippers.
Mandatory Implementation Timeline
The 7th edition of the UL 60335-2-8 standard will become mandatory on July 1, 2028.
Relevant UL certificates or reports obtained before this date do not require a standard update.
However, after July 1, 2028, if engineering changes are made to older products, they must comply with the requirements of the new standard.
This provision greatly conveniences manufacturers by alleviating concerns regarding mandatory updates for existing products.
Main Revisions from the 6th to the 7th Edition of the UL 60335-2-8 Standard

6.1 | WASHABLE and WET USE products must meet CLASS II or CLASS III structural requirements. | Revised requirement. These products cannot use a Class I structure. Stricter requirement. |
6.2 DV.1 | WET USE products must meet IPX7 requirements.
Detachable charging parts and non-handheld parts of Class III structure products may be exempt from this requirement. However, these two structures must still meet IPX4 requirements. | Revised requirement. These products are no longer exempt from IPX7 testing. Stricter requirement. |
6.2 DV.2 | WASHABLE products must meet IPX4 requirements.
Detachable charging parts and non-handheld parts of Class III structure products may be exempt from this requirement. | Revised requirement. These products are no longer exempt from IPX4 testing. Stricter requirement. |
21.1DV.1 | Impact hammer and steel ball impact tests are not applicable to the handheld parts of the product. | Revised requirement. |

25.101DV.1 | For handheld products (excluding safety extra-low voltage products), if a detachable power cord structure is used, this structure requires a 1,000-cycle insertion and extraction test. | New requirement. Adds insertion/extraction testing for detachable power cords. Stricter requirement. |
29.1DV | For products with a Class 0 structure and a rated voltage greater than 50V, the minimum clearance is 1.6mm, where the minimum spatial clearance from live parts to accessible metal surfaces is 3.2mm. | Revised requirement. Stricter requirement. |
29.2DV | For products with a Class 0 structure and a working voltage greater than 50V, the minimum creepage distance is 1.6mm, where the minimum creepage distance from live parts to accessible metal surfaces is 3.2mm. | Revised requirement. Stricter requirement. |
29.3DV | For products with a Class 0 structure, the minimum basic insulation thickness requirement is 0.66mm, while for mica sheets, it can be 0.25mm. | Revised requirement. Stricter requirement. |
