Update time : 2025-05-20

The CSA C22.2 standard applies to plug-connected, portable, and temporary string lights and accessories with a maximum rated input voltage of 120V. It covers seasonal and decorative lighting, luminaires, and light strings, primarily intended for indoor use in non-hazardous locations. While it shares certain application contexts with standards such as UL 1786 and CSA C22.2 NO.256:14, it also contains unique requirements due to its focus on specific structures and functions of string lights. These include safety, electrical performance, and material considerations, making it particularly important for compliance in the Canadian market. Although not identical to other standards, it serves as a complementary framework.

Product Compliance Requirements

1. Electrical Safety

- Insulation Performance: The electrical insulation of the string lights must meet regulatory standards. This ensures that no current leakage or short circuits occur during normal or abnormal use, safeguarding users from electric shock. For instance, insulation must remain effective even in damp environments to prevent accidents.

- Overload Protection: Overload protection mechanisms must activate promptly in cases of excessive current, such as when too many lamps are connected. For example, if a string light is rated for 1A, the protection device should immediately act when this value is exceeded, preventing fire or other safety hazards.

2. Material Safety

- Flame Resistance: Materials used in string lights should have good flame-retardant properties to prevent rapid ignition and spread in case of fire. This includes components like lamp housings and decorative materials, which should meet a minimum flame rating such as ul94 V-2 or higher.

- Corrosion Resistance: Considering that string lights may be used in various environments, materials should resist corrosion. For example, outdoor or humid indoor usage requires corrosion-resistant metal components to ensure long-term performance and safety.

3. Structural Safety

- Stability: The structural design must ensure the lights remain stable during regular use. Hanging or wall-mounted string lights must have secure mounting systems to prevent falling and potential injury.

- Shock Protection Design: Wiring and plugs should be designed to prevent accidental contact with live parts. For example, once a plug is inserted, its metal parts must be fully enclosed, and terminal connections sealed to minimize electric shock risk.

4. Labeling and Instructions

- Clear Labeling: The product must be clearly labeled with model number, part or item number, manufacturer or brand name, all of which must match the details in the test report. This facilitates identification by regulators and consumers and aids traceability in case of issues.

- Bilingual Instructions: In Canada, product detail pages, manuals, safety information, and warnings must be provided in both English and French to meet local regulations and ensure comprehension by users from different linguistic backgrounds.

Certification Process and Document Requirements

1. Certification Process

- Choose a Laboratory: Sellers must select an ISO 17025-accREDited laboratory (such as JJR Laboratory in China) to conduct the testing. These labs are equipped and qualified to test products in accordance with CSA C22.2 standards.

- Sample Testing: Product samples must be sent to the designated lab for testing. The laboratory will conduct evaluations based on the relevant criteria including electrical, material, and structural safety.

- Report Review and Submission: Upon completion, the lab will issue a test report. A valid ISO 17025 accreditation certificate (issued by an ILAC-MRA signatory) must accompany the report. The product details and test data in the report must be complete and accurate. All documents should then be submitted to Amazon for review.

2. Document Requirements

- Test Report: This is a crucial document issued by a qualified lab, including product specifications, tested items, and results to demonstrate compliance with CSA C22.2 requirements.

- Certification Mark: After csa certification is obtained, the CSA mark and certification number must be clearly displayed on the product. Additionally, this mark must be accurately shown in product descriptions, images, and marketing materials on the Amazon platform so that consumers can easily identify certified products.
