EU Standard Socket CE Certification IEC/EN 60884 Testing

On October 4, 2021, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) published IEC 60884-3-1:2021, titled "Plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes – Part 3-1: ParticULar requirements for socket-outlets with USB power supply." This standard applies to plugs and fixed or portable socket-outlets, with or without earthing contacts, intended for indoor or outdoor use in household and similar applications, for AC only, with a rated voltage above 50V and not exceeding 440V, and a rated current not exceeding 32A.

Scope of IEC/EN 60884:

1. This standard applies to plugs and fixed or portable socket-outlets for household and similar use, for indoor or outdoor environments, for AC only, with rated voltage above 50V and not exceeding 440V, and rated current not exceeding 32A, with or without earthing contacts.

2. For fixed socket-outlets with screwless terminals, the maximum rated current is 16A. This standard does not include requirements for flush-mounted boxes, only surface-mounted boxes necessary for testing. General mounting box requirements are specified in IEC 60670.

3. The standard applies to plugs integrated with cord sets, extension cord sets with portable socket-outlets, and plugs and sockets that are part of appliances, unless otherwise specified in appliance standards.

4. It also covers fixed socket-outlets used with fuses, circuit breakers, etc., under Extra-Low Voltage (ELV) conditions as defined in IEC 60364-4-41.

5. Sockets with indicator lights are also coveRED, provided the indicators meet relevant standards. Devices compliant with this standard are intended for environments where ambient temperature normally does not exceed 25°C and may occasionally REACH 35°C.

6. Compliant socket-outlets must be installed in a way that prevents ambient temperature from exceeding 35°C. Special constructions may be necessary for ships, vehicles, or hazardous locations (e.g., explosive environments).

2. Protection against electric shock and grounding arrangements 

3. Terminal and terminal end inspection; structure of fixed socket-outlets 

4. Structure of plugs and portable socket-outlets 

5. Aging resistance, enclosure protection, and moisture resistance 

6. Insulation resistance, dielectric strength, and earthing contact performance 

7. Temperature rise, breaking capacity, and normal operation performance 

8. Plug withdrawal force, flexible cable and its connection 

9. Mechanical strength, heat resistance, screws, and current-carrying part connections 

10. Creepage distances, clearances, and sealing compound distances 

11. Resistance to abnormal heat, flame resistance, and tracking resistance of insulation materials 

12. Rust resistance and additional tests for insulated pin sleeves
