Why is wercs Registration RequiRED?

1. Market Access: WERCSmart currently partners with retailers mainly in North America. Mandatory requirements are imposed by 43 retail brand channels, including Costco, CVS, Wal-Mart, Amazon, Lowe's, Meijer, Target, Staples, Walgreens, Sam’s Club, O'Reilly, etc.

2. Customs Clearance Requirement: Provides SDS/msds data to avoid customs detention.

3. Penalty Avoidance: Unregistered products may face penalties of thousands of US dollars per day.

What is WERCSmart Registration?

WERCSmart is a data software platform developed by The Wercs (Worldwide Environmental RegULatory Compliance Standard). It was initially created to address cheMICal compliance issues for retailers and manufacturers in North America.

WERCSmart has established a platform that enables North American retailers to manage chemical compliance for their suppliers (mostly manufacturers).

The primary regulations for chemical compliance cover various North American statutes, such as the OSHA chemical regulation 29 CFR 1910.1200 Hazard Communication, California South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCQAMD) regulations, and different state-level chemical management regulations. With continuous development, it now covers chemical management regulations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other regions.

The specific process: manufacturers register on the WERCSmart platform and submit product information sold to retailers, including chemical composition and other retailer-required documents (e.g., un38.3 test report). The WERCSmart platform reviews and compiles the data, and assigns a WPS ID to products that pass the review.

Among consumer electronic products, batteries and battery-built-in consumer electronics are common applicable products for WERCSmart, such as lithium batteries, portable DVD players, Bluetooth headsets, light bulbs, etc.

WERCSmart Registration for Batteries

Registration for battery-containing electronic products requires two steps:

1. The battery supplier first registers battery information on the WERCSmart system and adds the battery supplier’s name to the WERCS battery supplier list (multiple different battery suppliers shall register independently).

2. The electronic product supplier registers the electronic product, selects the included battery information during the process, locates the battery supplier in the list, and links the battery information.

Thus, MSDS control for battery-containing electronic products focuses on the battery itself.

Key Information Required:

un38.3 report, MSDS document, transportation method, UPC code, packaging method, weight (ounces), designated retailer name, retailer contact number and email, qualified supplier ID number.

WERCSmart Registration for Other Products

1. Products sold under a retailer’s brand require SDS document compilation via WERCSmart.

2. For liquid products, in addition to standard MSDS information, the following is generally required: specific gravity vs. water, pH value, boiling point, flash point, personal protective equipment (mask, gloves, apron, goggles), autoignition temperature, minimum ignition energy (mJ), water/oil solubility ratio, viscosity coefficient.

3. For OTC drugs and nutritional products, a product nameplate (PDF format) is required.
