Update time : 2025-03-03

Recently, some sellers have reported that products such as car chargers, power adapters, and batteries on Amazon US need to provide safety certification, including UL certification. Car chargers need UL 2089 certification, power adapters need UL 60950-1 certification, and mobile phone batteries require ul 2054/ul 1642 reports. Today, we will explain how to handle ul1642 certification for battery cells and the testing requirements involved.

What is the UL 1642 Standard?

UL 1642 is a safety standard for lithium battery cells, first introduced by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) in October 1985. The standard has been revised six times, with the current version being:

Sixth Edition, Dated September 29, 2020.

UL 1642 is internationally recognized as the authoritative standard for evaluating the safety and reliability of lithium battery cells under various fault conditions (e.g., changes in environmental temperature, unexpected external impacts, air transport, etc.).

Scope of UL 1642:

It applies mainly to both primary (non-rechargeable) and secondary (rechargeable) lithium battery cells, such as primary lithium metal button cells and secondary lithium-ion cells.

UL1642 Certification Test Items:

1. Electrical Performance Tests:

- Short circuit test; heating test

- Abnormal charging; forced discharge

2. Mechanical Tests:

- Crushing test; impact test; humidity test

- Impact test; vibration test; drop test

- Forced discharge test; abnormal charging test

3. Environmental Tests:

- Heating test; temperature cycling test

- Low pressure test (altitude simulation)

How to Apply for Approval to Sell Lithium Battery Products?

Amazon's policy requires that mobile power products sold on their site meet specific certification standards. The process includes:

1. Company Name

2. Seller ID / Supplier Code

3. Email Address

4. Phone Number

5. A list of ASINs you are applying to sell

6. Product images and manuals (if applicable) (Images must include all relevant safety information, compliance marks, and product details)

A test report from an ILAC ISO 17025 accredited laboratory is required, confirming that each product has been tested. JJR Laboratory in China provides this service.

Process for Obtaining a UL1642 Report:

1. Complete the application form

2. Provide product details

3. Send sample products

4. Once testing is completed successfully

5. ul report is issued
