Update time : 2026-01-12

FDA food contact material testing is of critical importance, with its testing standards and procedures continuously being refined and improved. As technology advances, new types of food contact materials emerge constantly, and the FDA is continuously evaluating and formulating corresponding specifications. For instance, food packaging made from certain nanomaterials may pose potential food safety risks due to their unique physical and chemical properties, and the FDA is closely monitoring and researching relevant testing methods.

JJR LAB is an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.

FDA food contact material testing refers to the inspection of materials that come into direct contact with food, to ensure that these materials do not pose any harm to food safety during their use.

Products Requiring Testing and Certification

Products exported to the United States that come into contact with food, such as cups, disposable lunch boxes, tableware, food packaging, etc. All food contact materials exported to the United States are required to obtain this certification.

Specific Regulations for Common Food Contact Materials

① Organic coatings, metals and electroplated products: U.S. FDA CFR 21 175.300

② Paper products: U.S. FDA CFR 21 176.170

③ Wood: U.S. FDA CFR 21 178.3800

④ ABS: U.S. FDA CFR 21 181.32 or 180.22

⑤ Acrylic resin: U.S. FDA CFR 21 177.1010

⑥ Sealing rings and gaskets for food containers (e.g., silicone rubber rings): U.S. FDA CFR 21 177.1210

⑦ EVA: U.S. FDA CFR 21 177.1350

⑧ Melamine resin: U.S. FDA CFR 21 177.1460

⑨ Nylon plastics: U.S. FDA CFR 21 177.1500

⑩ PP: U.S. FDA CFR 21 177.1520

⑪ PE, OP: U.S. FDA CFR 21 177.1520

The above is only a list of testing items for some common food contact materials.

Handling Measures for Non-compliant Products

The United States has strict handling measures for products that fail the testing. In case a product is found not meeting the FDA food contact material testing requirements, it may face penalties such as recall, fine, or even import ban. This will not only bring huge economic losses to the enterprise but also damage the enterprise's reputation. Therefore, export enterprises must attach great importance to FDA food contact material testing to ensure that their products enter the U.S. market in compliance with regulations.
