Amazon Policy for Consumer Products Containing Button or Coin Batteries

Amazon requires that all consumer products containing button batteries or coin batteriesand falling under the scope of 16 cfr part 1263must be tested and comply with specific regULations, standards, and requirements.

1)        Calculators

2)        Cameras

3)        Flameless candles

4)        Light-up clothing

5)        Shoes

6)        Holiday decorations

7)        Keychain flashlights

8)        Musical greeting cards

9)        Remote controls

10)     Clocks

 

Applicable Regulations and Standards

All consumer products containing button or coin batteries must comply with the following:

 

1. 16 CFR Part 1263— Safety Standard for Button or Coin Batteries and Consumer Products Containing Such Batteries

2. ANSI/UL 4200a— Safety Standard for Products Containing Button or Coin Batteries

 

RequiRED Information

You must have the following information on hand, as Amazon may request it. It is recommended to keep these documents accessible:

 

1)        Product Details: Product pages for button batteries, coin batteries, and products containing them must display the product model.

2)        Safety Instructions and User Manuals: Must be available for all products containing button or coin batteries.

3)        General Certificate of Conformity: This certificate must indicate compliance with UL 4200Aand confirm, based on testing, that the product meets UL 4200A requirements.

4)        Testing by an ISO 17025 Accredited Laboratory: Tests must confirm compliance with UL 4200A, which is referenced by 16 CFR Part 1263.

5)        Test Report: Must include images of the product to verify that the tested item matches the product listed on the Amazon detail page.

 

ANSI/UL 4200A Standard Overview

This standard is designed to prevent children from ingesting or aspirating button/coin batteries. Key requirements include:

 

1. Structural Requirements

1.1 Child-Resistant Battery Compartment

 

1)        For products with replaceable batteries:

The battery compartment must require a screwdriver, coin, or similar tool to open, or require two independent and simultaneous actionsto manually access the battery.

 

2)        For products with non-replaceable batteries:

The design must prevent battery access through the casing, or the battery must be fixed permanently using soldering, rivets, or similar methods.

 

2. Performance Tests

2.1 Pre-Treatment Tests

 

1)        Stress Relief Test: 70°C or higher, 7 hours (actual temperature rise)

2)        Battery Replacement Test: Open/close the battery compartment and replace the battery 10 times

 

2.2 Abuse Tests

 

1)        Drop Test:

Portable products: 1 meter, 3 drops

Handheld products: 1 meter, 10 drops

2)        Impact Test: 2 Joules, 3 times, using a 50.8 mm, 500 g steel ball

3)        Crush Test: 330 ±5 N (74.2 ±1.1 lbf), 10 seconds

4)        Torque Test: 0.50 Nm (4.4 in-lbf), 10 seconds

5)        Pull Test: 72.0 N (16.2 lbf), 10 seconds

6)        Compression Test: 136 N (30.6 lbf), 10 seconds

 

2.3 Battery Compartment Safety Test

Pull Test: 20 ±2 N (4.5 ±0.4 lbf), 10 seconds
