Update time : 2026-08-24

EN 301 893 is the harmonized standard for 5 GHz Wi-Fi (RLAN) in the European Union. It corresponds to Article 3.2 (essential requirements for radio frequency) of the red directive (2014/53/EU) and is used for CE certification. It is the 5 GHz counterpart to the 2.4 GHz EN 300 328 standard.

1. Basic Information

  • Full Name: Broadband Radio Access Networks (BRAN); 5 GHz high performance RLAN

  • Published by: ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute)

  • Latest Version: V2.1.1 (2017-05)

  • Applicable Directive: RED 2014/53/EU (replaces the old R&TTE Directive)

  • Core Purpose: Radio frequency compliance for CE certification of 5 GHz Wi-Fi devices

2. Frequency Range (Core)

It covers 5.15–5.725 GHz (UNII-1/2A/2C). For the 5.725–5.850 GHz range, refer to Annex B (different regulations apply depending on the country):

3. Core Technical Requirements

1) DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection, Critical)

  • Used in the 5470–5725 MHz band to avoid interference with radar systems (meteorological / military).

  • Requires 60 seconds of radar detection upon startup; if radar is detected, it must switch channels within 10 seconds and is banned from returning to the original channel for 30 minutes.

  • Must pass testing using an ETSI radar signal simulator.

2) TPC (Transmit Power Control)

  • Requires dynamic power adjustment with an adjustable range of at least 3 dB.

  • Maximum EIRP (Equivalent Isotropically Radiated Power):

  • 5150–5350 MHz: 200 mW (Indoor)

  • 5470–5725 MHz: 1 W (Outdoor)

3) Transmitter and Spurious Emission Limits

  • In-band: Spectrum mask, Adjacent Channel Leakage Ratio (ACLR).

  • Out-of-band: Adjacent frequency rejection for 4.9–5.1 GHz, 5.8 GHz, etc.

  • Spurious Emissions: Conducted / radiated emission limits (in conjunction with the EN 301 489 EMC standard).

4) EMC Synergy

  • RF Standard: EN 301 893

  • EMC Standard: EN 301 489-1/17 (Specific to 5 GHz)

4. Covered Devices

  • 5 GHz Wi-Fi APs / Routers

  • Laptops / Mobile Phones / Tablets (5 GHz clients)

  • 5 GHz Wireless Bridges (Point-to-Point / Point-to-Multipoint)

  • Devices supporting IEEE 802.11a/n/ac/ax (Wi-Fi 4/5/6)

5. Relationship with Certification

  • Mandatory in the EU Market: 5 GHz Wi-Fi devices must comply with EN 301 893 to obtain the ce marking.

  • Testing Items Include: DFS, TPC, Transmit Power, Spectrum, Spurious Emissions, and EMC.
