What is GEMS Certification?

GEMS stands for the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) Act 2012, implemented by Australia and New Zealand. It aims to improve the efficiency of electronic and electrical equipment as well as products across industries (including industrial, commercial, and residential sectors) to save energy. The GEMS certification was introduced under this act and became mandatory on October 1, 2012.

The new GEMS regULations encompass previous key policies such as:

- Mandatory Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS)

- Energy Rating Labeling Scheme (ERLS)

- Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Program

Moreover, GEMS expands the scope of energy efficiency to include REDucing greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy use efficiency. It allows both businesses and consumers to make better choices based on the lifecycle cost of operating a product.

Currently Regulated Products under GEMS Certification:

- Compact Fluorescent Lamps

- Extra-low Voltage Converters

- Double-ended Fluorescent Lamps

- Fluorescent Lamp Ballasts

- Incandescent Lamps

- Washing Machines

- Clothes Dryers

- Dishwashers

- External Power Supplies

- Televisions

- Digital Set-Top Boxes

- Electric Water Heaters

- Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps

- Three-phase Electric Motors

- Household Refrigerators

- Refrigeration Towers / Precision Air Conditioners

- Commercial Refrigerators

- Display Cabinets

- Distribution Transformers

GEMS Certification Process:

Step 2: Submit product samples for testing

Step 3: Complete registration upon passing the tests

Documents Required for GEMS Certification:

1. Application form and authorization letter

2. Product label with the corresponding certification mark

3. Product photos

(Factory inspection is typically required for certain countries, but CIG 023 factory inspection reports are generally acceptable)

GEMS Certification Timeline:

- Testing report issued within 1 week after product testing

- Registration takes approximately 2 weeks

GEMS Certification Costs:
