Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Soft Infant Carriers

 

Test Info:

This standard covers the performance requirements and test methods for soft infant and toddler carriers, as well as the labeling and instructions to ensure the safe use of these carriers by users and caregivers. Soft infant and toddler carriers are typically made from sewn fabric structures designed to accommodate a fULl-term infant to a toddler, usually worn in an upright position and close to the caregiver. The child’s weight generally ranges from 7 lbs to 45 lbs (3.2 kg to 20.4 kg). These carriers are typically worn by the caregiver, with the child suspended within the carrier, hanging from one or both shoulders of the caregiver. The carrier can be worn on the caregiver's front, side, or back, with the infant facing toward or away from the caregiver. This standard does not include "sling" products.

CompaRED to the previous version, ASTM F2236-24 includes significant updates, especially regarding product labeling and instructions. Additionally, it specifies that warning labels must comply with the ANSI Z535.4 – 2011 format requirements.

 

Key Changes from ASTM F2236-16a to ASTM F2236-24:

- Updates to the definitions in Clause 3, including adding parts of speech for each term.

- Renaming Clause 5.7 to "Flammability of Soft Infant and Toddler Carriers."

- Updates to Clause 5.7.2.

- Addition of Clause 5.7.3, which requires non-toy accessories sold with or attached to the product to also meet Clause 5.7's requirements.

- Updates to Clauses 8 & 9 regarding product labeling and instructions.

 

Test Requirements:

 

- Tests for toy accessories (in accordance with ASTM F963): 关于玩具配件的测试(依照ASTM F963)

- Flammability test (16 CFR 1500.44)

- Lead In Surface Coating (16 CFR 1303): 油漆中铅含量 (16 CFR 1303)

 

General Requirements:

- 5.1 Hazardous sharp points or edges (16 CFR 1500.48&49)

- 5.2 Small parts

- 5.3 Lead In Surface Coating (16 CFR 1303)

- 5.4 Wood parts

- 5.5 Locking and latching

- 5.6 Labeling

- 5.7 Flammability test (16 CFR 1500.3(c)(6)(vi))

- 5.8 Toy accessories (ASTM F963)

 

Performance Requirements:

- 6.1 Leg openings

- 6.2 DynaMIC load

- 6.3 Static load

- 6.4 Unbounded leg opening
