Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Frame Child Carriers
CompaRED to the previous version, ASTM F2549-14a, the ASTM F2549-22 standard has the following updates:
- The maximum weight capacity for frame-style child carriers has been increased from 40lb (18.1kg) to 50lb (22.7kg).
- The definition of attachment systems has been added.
- New flammability requirements for fabrics and non-toy accessories have been introduced.
- The dynaMIC impact test requirements have been revised, with additional slip rate requirements for attachment systems.
- The dynamic impact testing method has been revised, replacing the test dummy with the one specified in the European standard EN 13209-1:2015.
- The torque values for protective component removal tests have been updated.
- The warnings and instructions requirements have been revised.
- Sharp points
- Small parts
- Lead content in paints
- Flammability
- Hazardous points for cutting, pinching, and squeezing
- Unsealed openings
- Exposed coil springs
- Locking and latching (for foldable baby carriers)
- Accidental folding (for baby carriers that can stand independently)
- Labels
- Protective component integrity test for leg openings (to prevent the baby from falling through a single leg opening)
- Dynamic strength (tested under dynamic conditions for the frame, fasteners, and seams/stitching to ensure they can withstand breakage or separation)
- Static load (to ensure the baby carrier can hold 3 times the maximum recommended weight)
- Stability (for baby carriers that can stand independently)
- Restraint (all baby carriers must have a restraint system, with testing methods provided for the restraint system)
- Handle integrity (to prevent handle breakage or separation when pULled with 3 times the maximum recommended weight).
