What is LFGB Compliance?

LFGB (Lebensmittel und Futtermittelgesetzbuch) is the abbreviation of Germany's Food, Commodity and Feed Act, and it is also one of the strictest safety regULations for food contact materials within the EU. This regulation stipulates the safety standards that all food contact products (such as tableware, kitchen utensils, packaging materials, etc.) must comply with, to ensure that no harmful substances are released to contaminate food and protect consumers' health.

Core Key Points

• Scope of Application: All materials and products in contact with food (plastics, silica gel, metals, ceraMICs, coatings, etc.)

• Legal Effect: Mandatory requirement for the German market; products that fail to meet LFGB standards are prohibited from sale

• Compliance marking: Products that pass the test can be labeled with "LFGB compliant" or "LFGB approved"

Which Products Require LFGB Compliance?

1. Kitchen Supplies

• Tableware (knives, forks, chopsticks, spoons)

• Cookware (non-stick pans, stainless steel pans)

• Baking molds

• Cutting boards, kitchen tools

2. Food Packaging

• Food fresh-keeping containers

• Plastic packaging bags

• Beverage bottles, water cups

• Straws, bottle caps

3. Small Home Appliances

• Coffee machines, juicers

• Inner liners of rice cookers

• Blade assemblies of food processors

• Inner liners of kettles

4. Other Food Contact Materials

• Food-grade silica gel products

• Paper packaging

• Inner coatings of cans

• Ice cube trays, ice making molds

Key Test Items for LFGB Compliance?

1. Sensory Test (Sensory Migration)

• Test whether the product causes changes in the taste, odor or color of food

• Special Requirement: No peculiar smell or abnormal discoloration of food after the test

2. Heavy Metal Migration Test

• Detection of the leaching amount of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury

• Different limits apply to different materials (e.g., strict requirements for lead and cadmium migration in ceramic products)

3. Overall Migration Test

• Detection of the total amount of all migratable substances in the material

• Simulate migration under different food environments (water, acid, alcohol, oil)

4. Special Substance Detection

• Primary Aromatic Amines (PAA): Commonly found in coloRED plastic products

• BISphenol A (BPA): A high-risk substance in plastic products

• Formaldehyde: Special focus on melamine resin products

• Nitrosamines: A key test item for rubber products

5. Special Tests for Plastic Products

• Content of phthalates (plasticizers)

• Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) detection

• Peroxide residues (silica gel products)

6. Microbial Test (Applicable Products)

• Inspection of microbial content on the product surface

• Special focus on baby products and reusable products

LFGB Compliance Process

1. Product Classification and Evaluation

• Determine the material type and applicable test standards

• Formulate a personalized testing plan

2. Sample Preparation and Testing

• Provide representative samples

• JJR Laboratory conducts a full set of compliance tests

3. Test Report Review

• Professional engineers evaluate test data

• Ensure all items meet the limit requirements

4. Issuance of Compliance certificate

• Provide test reports in English/German

• Application for LFGB Declaration of Conformity is available

5. Preparation for Market Supervision

• Guide the correct marking of compliance information

• Respond to possible random market inspections

LFGB compliance is a crucial step for food contact products to enter the high-end markets of Germany and the EU. Making advance compliance preparations can not only avoid market risks, but also enhance product competitiveness. The JJR team helps you obtain LFGB compliance quickly and explore the European market smoothly!
