Does ce mark mean ROHS Compliance

Views :
Update time : 2026-04-17

The ce mark does not directly equal RoHS Compliance, but it generally means the product meets RoHS requirements.

CE is a mandatory conformity mark for products placed on the EU market, while RoHS is a specific environmental directive restricting hazardous substances.

For electrical and electronic equipment, RoHS compliance is a prerequisite for ce marking, although CE covers far broader safety and environmental requirements than just RoHS.

1. CE Mark

CE = Conformité Européenne

It is a legal conformity marking, not a quality certificate.

Applicable products:

Electronics, electrical appliances, toys, machinery, medical devices, and most other products.

Required documents:

EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC), technical documentation, authorized person signature.

Products without CE marking cannot be sold, circulated, or imported into the EU.

2. RoHS Directive

RoHS: Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic products.

RoHS 2 (2011/65/EU): regulates 6 substancesLead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, PBB, PBDE

RoHS 3 (2015/863): adds 4 phthalates, total 10 restricted substances

Applicability:

Electrical and electronic equipment with AC ≤ 1000V / DC ≤ 1500V.

Non‑compliance risks:

Product recall, fines, customs detention & rejection.

3. Relationship Between CE and RoHS

RoHS is part of the CE framework.

Electrical and electronic products must comply with RoHS to bear the CE mark.

Only when RoHS and other relevant directives are fulfilled can the CE mark be legally applied.

RoHS 2 is integrated into the CE system, requiring unified technical documentation and Declaration of Conformity.

4. CE + RoHS Compliance Process

1. Confirm product category and applicable directives

2. Check hazardous substances and exemptions

3. Complete testing and compile technical documentation

4. Issue EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC)

5. Affix CE mark
