Food Contact Materials and Articles (FCM)

Food contact materials (FCM) refer to materials and articles that are already in contact with food or are intended to come into contact with food under normal conditions of use, or materials from which substances may migrate into food.

Since food contact materials directly relate to food safety, major global markets—including the EU, China, USA, Japan, and South Korea—have established mandatory regulations regarding the hygiene and safety of these materials.

It is particularly important to note that the specific requirements vary significantly between different markets, and in some cases, they are not comparable at all. Therefore, when food contact products enter different markets, their compliance must be assessed according to the specific requirements of each respective market.

The safety of FCM spans various fields, such as tableware, kitchen utensils, cookware, kitchen appliances, food packaging, and food processing equipment. Common materials include plastics, rubber, metals, ceramics, glass, wood, paper, etc. Each material poses different potential hazards, so targeted control of certain indicators is a key strategy in managing FCM safety.

FCM must undergo safety evaluations to assess the potential migration of substances into food and to determine their suitability for food contact. This involves analyzing components, conducting migration studies, and evaluating potential hazardsassociated with the materials.
