UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, founded in Chicago in 1894. It is a world-renowned independent safety science organization and a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) accredited by OSHA in the United States. In accordance with authoritative standards such as ANSI and OSHA, it conducts safety testing and certification on products to ensure compliance with globally accepted safety specifications.
UL certification is not a mandatory regulation in the United States, but it has become an important market access threshold in North America. Major platforms and retailers such as Amazon and Walmart generally require UL certification for products including electronic and electrical appliances, lighting fixtures, batteries, and building materials. Products without certification can hardly enter formal sales channels.

Certification Type | English Name | Applicable Objects | Core Features | Mark Usage |
Listed Certification | UL Listed | Complete finished products (household appliances, IT equipment, lighting fixtures, battery packs, etc.) | Full-item testing in accordance with safety standards to reduce risks of fire and electric shock | Can be directly printed on finished products |
Recognized Certification | UL Recognized | Components and materials (power supplies, capacitors, wires, plastics, etc.) | Only evaluates component safety for finished product assembly | Marked on parts and components |
Classified Certification | UL Classified | Products for special scenarios such as explosion-proof, flame-retardant, and fire-fighting applications | Testing for specific hazardous working conditions; not a general safety certification | Applicable scope must be marked |
• Facility Certification: Evaluates the safety compliance of production sites
• Process Certification: Audits safety standards for production processes
• Personnel Certification: Safety qualifications of relevant practitioners
• System Certification: Overall safety system for products and processes
• NRTL Certification: OSHA stipulates that workplace electrical products require NRTL certification. UL is a mainstream NRTL organization, and its certification is mutually recognized with MET, CSA, and other certifications in the North American market.
• Amazon Requirements: Lithium batteries, electric tools, energy storage products, etc., usually need to meet standards such as UL 1642, UL 2054, and UL 62133-2 and provide certification reports.
1. Submit product specifications, product images, and other materials to JJR engineers
2. Engineers evaluate testing standards, quotations, and lead times
3. Sign the contract and the client arranges payment
4. Send samples to the JJR Laboratory
5. The laboratory conducts testing
6. Issue an electronic report for client confirmation
7. Upon confirmation of no issues, issue an official UL test report
• Initial Testing Fee: Starting at approximately USD 899 for general electronic and electrical products; higher for complex products
• Annual Maintenance Fee: Including factory inspection, file maintenance, and mark usage fees, totaling around USD 20,000–30,000 per year
The final cost is affected by product type, applicable standards, and number of models.
• Conventional Products: Testing takes approximately 2–3 weeks; the overall process lasts 1–3 months
• Complex Products: Energy storage systems, industrial equipment, etc., require 4–6 months
UL certification has no fixed validity period and remains valid as long as annual inspections and fees are completed on time. Retesting is required for changes to product structure or key components.
• New UL Certified Mark: Applicable to the United States, Canada, Japan, the European Union, and other regions; authenticity can be verified via the attached QR code
• Regional Marks: ULus (USA), cUL (Canada), cULus (US & Canada universal), UL-EU (EU), etc.
• Prohibition of Unauthorized Use: UL reserves the right to revoke authorization and pursue liability for uncertified or out-of-scope mark usage
