What is weee certification?

WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. It is a certification based on the EU weee directive, which aims to manage and treat waste generated by discarded electrical and electronic equipment. The directive regulates the recycling, treatment, and reuse of end-of-life equipment to reduce environmental pollution and promote sustainable development and environmental protection.

Scope of the WEEE Directive:

- Large and small household appliances

- IT and telecommunications equipment

- Consumer electronics

- Lighting equipment

- Power tools

- Toys, leisure, and sports equipment

- Medical devices

- Monitoring and control instruments

- Vending machines and more

Key Requirements:

Registration:

Manufacturers, importers, and distributors must register with the relevant national environmental authorities and comply with the applicable regulations.

Labeling:

Electrical and electronic equipment must be labeled to indicate compliance with the WEEE Directive, ensuring proper handling and recycling when discarded.

Collection and Treatment:

Manufacturers and distributors are responsible for ensuring the collection and treatment of equipment, guaranteeing environmentally safe disposal and reuse of waste devices.

Reporting and Record-Keeping:

Manufacturers and distributors must maintain records of sales and waste equipment treatment, and submit reports to the relevant regulatory authorities.

Certification Process:

1. Registration and Declaration

 - Companies must register with the environmental authority of the EU member state, providing company information and product categories.

 - Periodically declare the types, quantities, and recycling plans of equipment placed on the market.

2. Recycling Responsibility

 - Cooperate with authorized recycling companies to ensure compliant disposal of discarded equipment.

 - Bear recycling costs (calculated based on equipment type and weight).

3. Labeling Requirements

 - Certified products must display the “crossed-out wheeled bin” symbol, indicating proper classification and recycling.
