The electromagnetic environment of a rail transit system is complex, where high-frequency operations of traction power supplies, signal transmissions, and onboard equipment generate massive electromagnetic interference. If onboard electronic equipment fails to meet electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards, it is highly prone to signal disruption, equipment failure, and system linkage malfunctions, directly affecting the safety and stability of train operations. As the core EMC standard in the rail transit industry, EN 50121-4 specifically regulates the electromagnetic emission and immunity requirements for onboard signaling, communication, and supporting electronic control equipment. It serves as an essential compliance basis for the mass production, project bidding, and market access of rail transit onboard equipment.
The EN 50121 series is a dedicated electromagnetic compatibility standard for European Union rail transit, divided into multiple sub-sections to precisely adapt to full-scenario rail transit testing:
1.EN 50121-2: Whole-vehicle system-level electromagnetic compatibility testing
2.EN 50121-3: Trackside fixed installations emc testing
3.EN 50121-4: Onboard signaling, communication, and electronic control components emc testing
The latest valid version of this standard is EN 50121-4:2016. Its core purpose is to control the radiated electromagnetic disturbances of onboard electronic equipment while verifying the anti-interference capability of the equipment in complex rail transit electromagnetic environments, thereby preventing mutual electromagnetic interference between devices and avoiding interference with the train's master control system and the external public electromagnetic environment.
Applicable Core Equipment: Rail transit onboard communication equipment, signaling control devices, onboard electronic control units (ECUs), Eddy Current Brakes (ECBs), onboard power supply systems, and other signaling and communication onboard equipment.
Unlike general industrial EMC standards (en 61000-6 series), rail transit operating conditions have the special characteristics of high interference, strong vibration, high load, and all-weather operation:
1.Train traction converters and power systems generate 10 kHz–1 GHz wideband electromagnetic signals, which interfere with precision onboard electronic components;
2.Onboard equipment is densely arranged over long periods, and the simultaneous operation of multiple devices easily generates superimposed electromagnetic interference;
3.Rail transit equipment is critical to operational safety, and electromagnetic failure may trigger major risks such as signal interruption, braking abnormalities, and system downtime;
4.Bidding, mass production delivery, and export certification for domestic and international urban rail and high-speed rail projects all mandatorily require the provision of EN 50121-4 compliance test reports.
Taking the Eddy Current Brake (ECB) as an example, as core onboard braking equipment for trains, it generates high-frequency electromagnetic signals during operation, acting as both an interference source and an interfered object. It must pass dedicated EN 50121-4 EMC testing to ensure the stability of the braking system without interfering with train signaling and communications.
The standard clearly divides testing into two major dimensions: Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Electromagnetic Susceptibility/Immunity (EMS), featuring precise limits and stringent thresholds:
Controls the electromagnetic signals radiated and conducted outward when the equipment is operating, so as to avoid interfering with other precision equipment on the train:
1.Radiated Electromagnetic Disturbance: Strict limits in the 30 MHz–1 GHz frequency band to eliminate excessive high-frequency radiation;
2.Conducted Electromagnetic Disturbance: Controls low-frequency conducted interference on power lines and signal lines to ensure pure line signals.
Simulates various electromagnetic interferences in rail transit scenarios to verify the operational stability of the equipment:
1.Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Immunity: Contact discharge ±8 kV, air discharge ±15 kV;
2.Radio-Frequency (RF) Conducted Immunity: 10 Vrms high-intensity interference testing;
3.Operating Condition Immunity Testing: Electrical Fast Transient/Burst (EFT), surge, voltage dips, and other operating condition immunity tests.
The equipment remains powered on and operates normally throughout the entire testing process. Both during and after the test, if the equipment exhibits no freezing, no rebooting, no signal abnormalities, no functional failures, and no parameter drift, it is deemed compliant and up to standard.
The ECB (Eddy Current Brake) is key onboard braking equipment in rail transit. Relying on eddy currents to achieve non-contact braking, it offers the advantages of stable braking, low wear, and low noise, and is widely used in urban rail and high-speed rail vehicles.
Due to the special nature of its working principle, its electromagnetic radiation characteristics differ from those of ordinary electronic control equipment, requiring targeted adaptation during testing:
1.Complete the full suite of onboard EMC emission and immunity testing in accordance with EN 50121-4:2016;
2.Supplement with combined IP66 enclosure protection testing, iec 62368-1 electrical safety testing, RoHS hazardous substances testing, and induction loop testing;
3.Simulate real train installation conditions with fixture mounting and powered on-load testing, ensuring the data closely matches actual application scenarios;
4.Issue CNAS-accredited compliance reports to meet the requirements of domestic project access, EU exports, and customer factory audits.
