LED string lights, as a key element for creating festive atmospheres, are highly sought after in the market. Many LED string light manufacturers choose to sell their products on platforms such as Amazon and TEMU. Major cross-border platforms clearly stipulate that string light products exported to the EU must have CE certification, and those exported to the United States must have a UL reportbefore they can be listed for sale.

IEC 60598 Standard Overview

The IEC 60598standard is a crucial international safety standard in the field of electrical lighting equipment. It specifies safety requirements and corresponding test methods that must be strictly followed during the design and manufacturing process. The purpose is to comprehensively protect consumers’ personal safety when using lighting products.

Applicable Product Range

① Ordinary luminaires: Designed mainly to protect live parts, without special ingress protection or waterproofing.

② General-purpose luminaires: Not made for specific professional purposes; includes pendant lamps, some spotlights, and certain surface-mounted or recessed luminaires.

③ Adjustable luminaires: Use hinges, lifting devices, or other mechanical structures to allow rotation or movement of parts; available in both portable and fixed types.

④ Combination luminaires: Consist of a basic luminaire body with interchangeable parts that users can replace by hand or with simple tools.

Key Elements

1. Safety classifications— Divided according to intended installation environment, with detailed criteria for each class.

2. Test method specifications— Covers electrical performance, mechanical strength, and protection ratings, with scientific, precise procedures to ensure reliable results.

3. Marking and instructions— Requires clear labeling of safety class, IP code, rated voltage, and compatible lamp types for accurate consumer guidance.

UL588 Standard Overview (USA)

UL588, developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), addresses fire hazards caused by electrical faults (short circuits, overheating) or flammable materials in string lights. Historically, poor-quality string lights caused hundreds of fires annually; this standard has reduced electric shock and fire risks by over 90%.

Applicable Scenarios

Seasonal decorative string lights for temporary use (≤90 days), such as Christmas lights, holiday light strips, and LED decorative lights, with input voltage ≤120V (US mains standard).

Exclusions

① Rope lights (UL2388)

② Night lights (UL1786)

③ General household lamps (UL153)

④ String lights with lamp holders larger than E17

Covered Types

① Series or parallel string lights

② Decorative lights

③ Frame lights

④ Candelabra lights

⑤ Twinkle controllers

⑥ Flower-covered string lights

Key Features

① Portable, plug-connected, non-permanent installation

② Holiday-themed design (e.g., Christmas, Halloween)

Core Testing Requirements

Electrical Safety

① Dielectric withstand test: 1500V AC for 1 minute without breakdown

② Leakage current: ≤0.5mA (retested under humid conditions)

③ Overcurrent protection: Series strings with 20 or more bulbs, or installation of fuse to prevent short circuit fire

Mechanical & Structural Safety

Pull test: Lamp head withstands at least 4.5kg axial force without detachment (dual fixing preferred)

Enclosure strength:

① Metal enclosures: Thickness ≥0.81mm

② Plastic enclosures: Must pass drop, impact, and low-temperature impact (-35°C) tests

Fire Resistance

① Plastic parts must meet UL94 V-2 or higher (4-inch vertical flame test)

② Heat-generating parts must be at least 38mm away from flammable materials

Environmental Adaptability

① Temperature rise: Wire temperature increase ≤40°C during continuous operation

② Aging test: Continuous operation at 70°C for 7 days

Amazon Compliance Key Points

Mandatory Requirements

Products without UL588 reports will be removed; repeated violations may result in account suspension

Label specifications:

① Indoor use: Green UL holographic label

② Indoor/outdoor use: Red UL holographic label

③ Must clearly state “For seasonal use only” (font size ≥1/16 inch)

Common Rejection Reasons

① Laboratory accreditation not valid (must verify via UL official website)

② Product description inconsistent with report (e.g., string length, number of LEDs)
