In January 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission published the 8th edition of iec 60335-2-40, Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-40: Particular requirements for electrical heat pumps, air-conditioners and dehumidifiers. This newly released 8th edition of IEC 60335-2-40 is to be used in conjunction with IEC 60335-1 Ed 6.0. The specific update details are described below.
Applicable clauses: Clause 12 of the base standard (IEC 60335-1) has now been made applicable to this standard.
Double-wall heat exchangers: New requirements have been added to ensure that, in the event of a single-wall failure, such heat exchangers remain resistant to freezing and pressure, and can prevent refrigerant from leaking into the secondary circuit.

Testing: The requirements regarding the applicable circumstances for test probe 18 have been modified.
Sensor requirements: Specific sensor requirements have been removed, and the relevant standards are currently being developed in a new technical specification (IEC TS 63542:2024).

Remote operation: Relevant requirements have been modified to allow the equipment to perform continuous and remote operations, provided that no hazard is created.
CEN/CENELEC: The European version, prEN IEC 60335-2-40:2024, has modified its introduction and other specific annexes (ZZA and ZZB) to comply with the requirements of EU directives.
