The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), has established mandatory safety standards for nursing pillows (16 C.F.R. Part 1242). These regulations address potential safety hazards such as infant suffocation and falls. Non-compliant products may face sales bans, recalls, and other enforcement actions.

This includes any removable covers or protective sleeves sold with the product. Such products may be placed on, wrapped around, or worn by the caregiver while seated or reclined.
