What is an IP Dust and Water Resistance Rating Test Report?

In industrial production, especially for electronic and electrical products intended for outdoor use, different levels of dust and water resistance are requiRED for equipment. The enclosure protection rating (IP code / dust and water resistance) of automated instrumentation equipment is a crucial indicator to ensure the normal operation of the device and guarantee the safety and reliability of the product.

1. What is an IP Protection Rating?

The sealing performance of the enclosure of electrical devices, such as coding machines, is commonly defined internationally by the EN60529 standard. This standard quantifies various protection categories primarily covering:

Protection against solid foreign objects entering the enclosure (including tools, fingers, dust, etc.)

Protection against water ingress (such as condensation, spraying, immersion, etc.) that coULd cause harmful effects on the device.

The two digits following "IP" represent the degree of protection of the enclosure against solid objects and water ingress:

The first digit indicates the level of protection against dust and foreign solid objects.

The second digit indicates the level of protection against moisture and water intrusion.

The higher the number, the stronger the protection.

2. Detailed Classification of IP Water Resistance Ratings:

1. Protection against vertically falling water drops: Water drops falling vertically should not cause damage.

2. Protection against water drops when the enclosure is tilted 15°: When the enclosure is tilted up to 15° in any direction, vertically falling water drops should not cause damage.

3. Protection against sprayed water: Water sprayed at a 60° angle from the vertical on both sides should not cause damage.

4. Protection against splashing water: Water splashed from any direction against the enclosure should not cause damage.

5. Protection against water jets: Water jets from any direction against the enclosure should not cause damage.

6. Protection against powerful water jets: Strong water jets from any direction against the enclosure should not cause damage.

7. Protection against temporary immersion: The enclosure can be temporarily immersed in water under standard pressure without harmful water ingress.

8. Protection against continuous immersion: The enclosure can be immersed under specified conditions without harmful water ingress.

3. Detailed Classification of IP Dust Resistance Ratings:

The dust protection level is represented by the first digit ranging from 1 to 6, corresponding to IP1X through IP6X codes.

1. Protection against solid objects ≥ 50 mm: Objects such as large probes or balls with a diameter of 50 mm should not completely enter the enclosure.

2. Protection against solid objects ≥ 12.5 mm: Objects with a diameter of 12.5 mm should not completely enter.

3. Protection against solid objects ≥ 2.5 mm: Objects with a diameter of 2.5 mm should not completely enter.

4. Protection against solid objects ≥ 1.0 mm: Objects with a diameter of 1.0 mm should not completely enter.

5. Protection against dust: Dust ingress is not completely prevented but should not enter in quantities that harm the equipment.

6. Dust tight: No dust should enter the enclosure under 20 millibar low pressure conditions.
