PSE(Product Safety of Electrical Appliance & Materials) certification—referred to in Japan as a "conformity inspection"—is a mandatory market access system for electrical products in Japan. It is a key component of Japan's Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law. Under this law, electrical products are classified into two categories:
1. Specified Electrical Appliances: 115 product types
2. Non-Specified Electrical Appliances: 339 product types
The pse certification covers both EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility)and safetyrequirements.
1. Insulation resistance test
2. Constant voltage continuous charging test
3. Vibration test
4. Battery casing test under high-temperature conditions
5. Temperature cycling test
6. External short-circuit test
7. Free fall test
8. Mechanical impact test
9. Thermal shock test
10. Crush test
11. Low pressure test
12. Overcharge test
13. Forced discharge test
14. High-rate charging protection test for battery cells (Lithium system)
15. Forced internal short-circuit test for battery cells
16. Overcharge protection function test for batteries
17. Device free-fall test
1. Battery cells and batteriesfall under Japan's non-mandatory certification, so the round pse markis sufficient.
2. Mandatory Test: Batteries and battery cells must undergo internal short-circuit testingwhen exported to Japan.
1. JIS C 8712: Safety requirements for sealed secondary cells or batteries for portable devices
2. JIS C 8714: Safety testing for small lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and battery packs for portable devices
1. Application form
2. Product samples
3. Product specification sheet
1. Battery cells: 86 (prismatic), 96 (cylindrical)
2. Batteries: 35 units
Approximately 4 weeks
According to Japan’s Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law, batteries exported to Japan mustobtain PSE certification.
