What is EMI in Electronic Products

EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) in electronic products refers to the phenomenon where an electronic device generates electromagnetic waves during operation, which are emitted outward and interfere with other parts of the device or with other external devices. Below is a detailed explanation of EMI:

What is EMI in Electronics(图1)

1. Types of Interference

- Conducted Interference: Interference signals are coupled from one electrical network to another through conductive media (such as wires). For example, a computer power supply affecting the household electrical network.

- Radiated Interference: The interference source emits signals through space in the form of electromagnetic waves, affecting other devices. For instance, electromagnetic waves emitted by a mobile phone antenna may interfere with nearby electronic equipment.

2. Common Manifestations

- TV screens showing static noise.

- Rice cookers failing to properly cook rice.

- Air conditioners turning on automatically.

These are all examples of how electromagnetic interference can REDuce device performance.

3. Hazards and Impacts

- In severe cases, EMI may disrupt the normal operation of critical systems such as medical devices or avionics, potentially endangering safety.

- Excessive electromagnetic radiation may also pose potential risks to human health.

4. Countermeasures

- Shielding Technology: Using conductive materials (such as metal shielding enclosures or conductive rubber) to block the propagation of electromagnetic waves.

- Filtering Technology: Employing filters (such as EMI filter circuits) to eliminate high-frequency interference signals.

- Proper Layout and Grounding: Optimizing circuit design to reduce parasitic capacitance and inductance, and ensuring proper grounding of equipment.

5. Relationship with EMC and EMS

- EMI is a component of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), which requires devices not only to minimize interference to the outside but also to withstand external interference.

- EMS (Electromagnetic Susceptibility)measures a device’s ability to resist external electromagnetic interference. Together, EMI and EMS form the core requirements of EMC.

In summary, EMI is a critical issue in the design and use of electronic products. Through proper design and protective measures, its effects can be effectively minimized, ensuring stable device operation and user safety.
