What is the Battery UL62133 Test Report?

Views :
Update time : 2026-07-21

For battery and supporting electronic equipment enterprises targeting the North American (U.S., Canada) market, the UL62133 test report is an indispensable compliance credential. As the mandatory safety standard in North America for portable sealed secondary cells and batteries, UL62133 has been divided and revised into two major modules: nickel systems (UL62133-1) and lithium systems (UL62133-2), covering mainstream battery types such as lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride. Without a compliant test report, batteries and supporting products will not be able to clear customs or enter mainstream channels like Amazon. This article concisely analyzes the core of the UL62133 test report, breaking down the test items, application process, and key points for avoiding pitfalls, to help enterprises efficiently obtain the report and successfully expand overseas.

What is the UL62133 Test Report?

The UL62133 test report is an official testing credential issued by a UL-recognized laboratory after a battery passes all the tests under the UL62133 series standards. Its core purpose is to prove the safety compliance of the battery under electrical, mechanical, environmental, and other scenarios. The full name of the standard is "Safety Requirements for Portable Sealed Secondary Cells and Batteries." It has been divided and revised into UL62133-1 (nickel systems, such as Ni-MH/Ni-Cd) and UL62133-2 (lithium systems, such as lithium-ion/lithium-polymer). It is equivalently adopted from the IEC standard and is mutually recognized by the U.S. and Canadian markets.

Its mandatory nature stems from North American regulatory requirements: the United States and Canada explicitly stipulate that portable batteries and supporting electronic equipment (such as Bluetooth earphones and smartwatches) must provide a UL62133 test report before entering the market. It is also a strict requirement for listing on e-commerce platforms like Amazon. Failing to provide a compliant report will lead to risks such as customs detention, product delisting, and high fines, directly blocking the path to overseas markets.

Which Batteries Require the UL62133 Test Report?

The UL62133 test report applies to portable sealed secondary cells and batteries. The core covered categories include:

  • Lithium-ion / Lithium-polymer batteries: (Supporting mobile phones, earphones, and power banks)

  • Nickel-metal hydride / Nickel-cadmium batteries: (Supporting small digital devices)

It covers testing scenarios for both individual cells and battery packs.

Clear exemption scope: Non-portable batteries, such as automotive power batteries and large-scale industrial energy storage batteries, must comply with specific standards like ul1973 and do not require UL62133 testing. Secondary batteries without a sealed design are also not applicable to this standard. Knowing this helps avoid incorrect applications that delay the process cycle.

UL62133 Test Items

The core of the test report is the passing data for all test items. The lithium system (UL62133-2) is currently the mainstream testing type. The core test items are divided into 4 major categories, which directly determine the validity of the report:

  1. Electrical Safety Testing: External short circuit, overcharging, forced discharge, etc., simulating electrical abuse scenarios to ensure there is no risk of fire or explosion.

  2. Mechanical Safety Testing: Mechanical shock, crushing, nail penetration (a key focus for lithium systems), free fall, etc., verifying the structural stability of the battery.

  3. Environmental and Thermal Safety Testing: Temperature cycling, high-temperature baking, high-temperature and high-humidity storage, etc., adapting to extreme usage environments.

  4. Protection Circuit Validation: Testing the battery pack's overcharge, over-discharge, and short-circuit protection functions to ensure the protection mechanisms are reliable.

Application Process, Cycle, and Fees

Core Process (Completed in 4 Steps):

  1. Preliminary Assessment: Determine the battery type and match it with UL62133-1 or -2.

  2. Sample Submission and Testing: Submit 20-30 cells and 10-15 battery packs, selecting a UL-recognized laboratory.

  3. Report Issuance: After passing the tests, the official report will be issued within 1-2 weeks.

  4. Report Maintenance: Cooperate with annual spot checks to ensure the report remains valid long-term.

Cycle & Fees:

  • Cycle: Normally 6-8 weeks (without rectifications); expedited services can shorten this to 2-3 weeks.

  • Fees: Starting from $1,500 for a single type of battery, depending on the battery specifications and test items. Lithium systems are slightly more expensive due to items like nail penetration testing.

The UL62133 test report is the "safety pass" for batteries expanding into North America. Its core value is proving that the battery is safe, compliant, and meets market access requirements. Enterprises need to accurately match the battery type with the corresponding standard module, choose a compliant laboratory, and proactively avoid pitfalls such as non-compliant samples or laboratories with insufficient qualifications. Efficiently processing the test report lays a solid foundation for batteries and supporting products to successfully break into the North American market.
