What is RoHS?

RoHS stands for the "Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment" directive. Currently, it mainly restricts six hazardous substances in electronic and electrical products: lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). More hazardous substances may be restricted in the future.

The directive was proposed by the European Parliament and Council, and EU member states began mandatory implementation on JULy 1, 2006.

At that time, electronic and electrical products containing hazardous heavy metals or using polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers as flame retardants will be prohibited from entering the EU market.

What is WEEE?

WEEE stands for the "Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment" directive. This directive was also proposed by the European Parliament and Council, and EU member states began mandatory implementation on August 13, 2005. Its main aim is to prevent waste generation and to facilitate the recycling, reuse, and remanufacturing of waste to REDuce resource wastage.

Scope of the RoHS Directive:

1. Large household appliances: refrigerators, washing machines, MICrowave ovens, air conditioners, etc.

2. Small household appliances: vacuum cleaners, electric irons, hairdryers, ovens, clocks, etc.

3. IT and telecommunications equipment: computers, fax machines, telephones, mobile phones, etc.

4. Consumer devices: radios, televisions, video recorders, musical instruments, etc.

5. Lighting equipment: fluorescent lamps other than household lighting, lighting control devices

6. Power tools: drills, lathes, welding equipment, spray guns, etc. (excluding large industrial tools that need to be installed)

7. Toys/Leisure and sports equipment: electric vehicles, video game consoles

8. Medical devices: radiotherapy equipment, electrocardiogram testers, analytical instruments, etc.

9. Monitoring/Control devices: smoke detectors, thermostatic chambers, factory monitoring and control machines, etc.

10. Vending machines

The RoHS directive does not currently apply to items 8 and 9.
