A baby playpen is a non-inflatable standalone product with sides made of textiles or other soft materials, secuRED to the floor to create an enclosed play area for children. It is designed to protect infants from injury during exploration. The main function of a baby playpen is to prevent babies from leaving the safety zone when unattended, thus avoiding accidents such as falls or collisions.

 

Amazon Canada Playpen Standards: SOR/2018-83 + SOR/2016-188 + SOR/2016-193 + SOR/2018-186

Baby playpens are specifically designed for infants as a play and safety device. The Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) is established to ensure the safety of all consumer products sold in the Canadian market.

I. What standards must be included in the CCPSA certification when listing a baby playpen on Amazon Canada? What does each represent?

1. SOR/2018-83 (Consumer Products Containing Lead RegULations)

This standard tests the lead content in products. When tested in accordance with good laboratory practices, the accessible parts of consumer products must not contain more than 90 mg/kg of lead.

 

2. SOR/2016-193 (Surface Coating Materials Regulations – Lead)

This standard assesses lead (≤90 mg/kg) and mercury (≤10 mg/kg) content in surface coating materials such as stickers, films, paints, and similar materials to protect consumer health.

 

3. SOR/2016-188 (Phthalates Regulations)

Any vinyl part that can be mouthed by children under four years old must not contain more than 1000 mg/kg of phthalates. This includes DINP, DIDP, and DNOP, when tested according to good laboratory practices.

 

4. SOR/2018-186 (Playpens Regulations)

This standard applies specifically to baby playpens. It includes:

- Surface coating lead content must not exceed 90 mg/kg.

- Migration of compounds of antimony, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, or barium must not exceed 1000 mg/kg.

- Total mercury content must not exceed 10 mg/kg.

- Requirements for structural integrity, openings, mechanical hazards (e.g., pinching, shearing), strength, flammability, and part assemblies.

 

II. What additional standards are required if the playpen includes accessories?

1. Playpen with a diaper changing table:

No additional standard; same requirements as a standard baby playpen.

 

2. Playpen with mobile or other toys:

Must comply with sor/2011-17 (Toys Regulations), which covers:

- Packaging

- Electrical hazards

- Mechanical hazards

- Auditory hazards

- Thermal and flammability hazards

- Toxicological hazards

 

3. Playpen with cradle or bassinet accessory:

Must also comply with SOR/2016-152 (Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations), which requires:

- Surface coating lead content not exceeding 90 mg/kg

- Migration of compounds of antimony, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, or barium not exceeding 1000 mg/kg

- Total mercury content not exceeding 10 mg/kg

- Additional requirements for angle, pinching/shearing, slat strength and integrity, and side panel types

 

III. Certification Process for Baby Playpen:

1. Fill out the application form

2. Provide product documentation

3. Submit samples

4. Testing by JJR Lab in China

5. Draft report issued → Confirm accuracy → Final certificate issued
