Almost every country in the world regulates the EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility)of electronic products within its borders. In the United States, this regulation is enforced by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). According to Title 47 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), all electronic products entering the U.S. must undergo emc certification, also known as FCC certification. This applies across all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.
FCC divides the certification process into two types depending on the product category:
Applicable to general electronic products without wireless functions.
(Note: The former “DoC” and “Verification” processes were merged into sdoc in 2017.)
Applicable to electronic products with wireless functionality.
TWS earbuds / Bluetooth earphones, wireless cameras, Bluetooth speakers, wireless chargers, smartwatches, in-car Bluetooth devices, video doorbells, game controllers, remote controllers, all-in-one PCs, digital signage, smart lighting, voice assistants, drones, remote-controlled aircraft/car toys, smart home devices, TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), Bluetooth scales, Bluetooth trackers, pet trackers, wireless keyboards/mice, Bluetooth selfie sticks, and more.
For wireless products, the required tests typically include EMC + RF.
For communication products used close to the human body, testing also includes SAR(Specific Absorption Rate), especially when:
a. The distance between the device and the human body is less than 20cm
b. Output power exceeds 10dBm
Requirements vary by product type. The average testing timeline is 2–3 weeks.
According to U.S. regulations, any foreign companyengaged in the manufacture, preparation, assembly, or processingof equipment imported into the U.S. must designate a U.S. Authorized Agent (U.S. Agent).
1. Acts as the designated contact between the manufacturer and U.S. regulatory bodies. Assists with:
a. Incident reporting
b. Notifications
c. Product recalls, etc.
2. Retains the manufacturer’s technical documentationand responds to queries or investigations raised by regulatory agencies.
3. The following U.S. Agent information must be includedin FCC/FCC ID certification documents:
a. Name
b. Address
c. Phone number
Each FCC ID is composed of:
1.Grantee Code:
A 3- or 5-character alphanumeric code assigned by the FCCto each company (not chosen by the applicant). This code remains fixed and is used in all future FCC ID applications for that company.
2.Product Code:
A self-assigned alphanumeric string (1–14 characters), typically based on the product model.
3.FCC ID Format:
`[Grantee Code] + [Product Code]`
e.g., ABC123456 or ABCDE12345678
