EN 71-8 Testing Standard for Swings, Slides, and Similar Toys

As families place greater emphasis on children's motor development, domestic activity toys such as small swings, slides, and climbing frames have become standard "backyard features" for many households. However, the safety risks of these toys, which have considerable size and complex structures, are much higher than those of ordinary handheld toys. The BS EN 71-8:2018 "Safety of toys - Part 8: Activity toys for domestic use" standard establishes strict and specific safety regulations tailored to such products.


Scope of the Standard

EN 71-8 applies to activity toys intended for domestic indoor or outdoor use. These toys typically allow children to perform dynamic activities such as climbing, jumping, sliding, and swinging; therefore, their risk assessment must consider engineering factors like fall height, dynamic loads, and structural stability. This standard is distinct from public playground equipment standards (such as the EN 1176 series), as it is formulated specifically for the lower frequency of use and the supervisory conditions found in domestic environments.

Core Safety Requirements

The standard makes comprehensive regulations from the source of design to usage and maintenance:

  • Structural integrity and strength:

  • All load-bearing components (such as posts, beams, and connectors) must be able to withstand static and dynamic load tests, simulating children's activities and multi-person misuse scenarios.

  • Materials must possess sufficient mechanical properties, evaluated by referencing relevant standards (such as EN ISO 4287 for surface roughness).

  • Stability and anti-overturning: Activity toys (especially swings and climbing frames) must pass forward and lateral stability tests to ensure they will not tip over during use. It is usually required that the toy remains stable even if the ground is sloped or children are climbing on one side.

  • Fall space and shock absorption: For platforms with a risk of falling (height > 600mm), an adequate clearance area must be provided underneath, and the use of impact-absorbing surfacing (such as safety mats) is recommended.

  • Openings and clearances: Strictly controls the dimensions of V-shaped openings and clearances that could entrap a child's head, torso, or limbs, preventing pinching or strangulation injuries.

  • Specific requirements for swings: Contains detailed regulations regarding the size and strength of swing seats, the swinging space, and the connection methods of suspension chains/ropes.

  • Specific requirements for slides: Contains specific requirements for the height of the slide sides, the exit speed at the run-out section, and the treatment of the slide edges.


Product Installation, Maintenance, and Usage Instructions

Given that most domestic activity toys are self-assembled, their safety heavily relies on correct installation. EN 71-8 mandatorily requires:

  • Clear and detailed assembly instructions: Including the required tools, illustrations for each step, torque requirements for fasteners (if applicable), and leveling methods.

  • Secure anchoring requirements: For large outdoor toys, methods and accessories for anchoring them to the ground (such as ground pegs or instructions for concrete foundations) must be provided.

  • Regular inspection and maintenance guidelines: Specifying the critical parts that users need to inspect regularly (such as connection points, welds, and rope wear) and the maintenance methods.

  • Safe usage warnings: Clearly marking warnings such as applicable age, maximum weight capacity, user number limitations, and prohibitions against using the product in severe weather.


Environmental Durability Requirements

For activity toys used outdoors, the standard also references environmental testing requirements, such as:

  • Corrosion resistance: References the ISO 9227:2017 salt spray test to evaluate the rust resistance of metal components.

  • Weather resistance: References the EN ISO 4892-3:2016 xenon arc aging test to evaluate the anti-aging performance of plastic components under ultraviolet light.
