The EU is committed to reducing electronic waste and promoting unified charging technology and charging interfaces that support multiple electronic products. On November 23, 2022, the directive EN IEC62680-1-3/62680-1-2 was issued, requiring electronic product manufacturers to use USB-C charging interface technology. It mandates that smartphones, tablets, cameras, and other small to medium-sized portable electronic devices, as well as laptops, comply with USB-C charging interface requirements by 2024 and 2026, respectively.

IEC62680-1-2 primarily defines the USB PD power delivery specifications, while IEC62680-1-3 specifies the standards for USB Type-C cables and connectors.

This directive covers a total of 13 types of devices, including smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, handheld gaming consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation devices, and laptops.

The mandatory implementation date of the directive is December 28, 2024, for most devices (with laptops having a later implementation date of April 28, 2026). After these dates, only devices that meet the directive's requirements will be allowed to enter the EU market.

EN IEC 62680-1-3 includes aspects related to Type-C connectors, Type-C cables, and Type-C protocols. It also covers pin definitions, mechanical structure requirements, dimensional requirements, electrical performance requirements, master-slave roles of Type-C devices, power supply roles, power capabilities, and related handshake protocols and state machine definitions.

EN IEC 62680-1-2 is based on the fast-charging protocol using the Type-C CC pin. Both the power-consuming and power-supplying devices can negotiate and adjust voltage, current, and charging direction. This standard details electrical requirements, physical layer, protocol layer, system strategies, state machines, and power rules.

Therefore, products must undergo rigorous testing to comply with these standards. The China JJR Laboratory provides testing services for IEC 62680-1-2/62680-1-3 standards.
