Introduction to the EN IEC 62680 Test

On June 27, 2023, the European Union approved and adopted the 2022 versions of the EN IEC 62680-1-2 and EN IEC 62680-1-3 standards. According to the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), by December 28, 2024, devices such as smartphones, MICe, keyboards, digital cameras, tablets, handheld gaming consoles, portable speakers, portable navigation systems, e-readers, wireless headphones, in-ear headphones, and headsets must comply with these directive requirements. Furthermore, by April 28, 2026, laptops must also include USB Type-C ports to meet the directive's requirements.

The key points of these requirements are as follows:

1. Portable Speakers: This requirement applies to portable Bluetooth speakers; fixed-position speakers are excluded. Similarly, handheld gaming consoles and portable navigation systems are also included. TWS (True Wireless Stereo) headphones must comply with the requirements.

2. Thirteen Categories of Products: The listed 13 product types in the EU market must comply with EN IEC 62680-1-3 and EN IEC 62680-1-2.

3. Type-C Charging Port: These products must have a USB Type-C charging port on the EU market. Additional charging port types may also be included.

Scope of Standards

- EN IEC 62680-1-3: USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification

This standard covers three main areas:

  - Type-C Connectors, Type-C Cables, and Type-C Protocols (Functions).

  - It specifies pin assignments, mechanical structure requirements, dimensions, electrical performance, roles (host/device and power source/sink), power capabilities, associated handshake protocols, and state machine definitions for Type-C devices.

- EN IEC 62680-1-2: USB Power Delivery Specification

This standard applies to devices requiring power delivery above standard USB levels. It describes and regULates power delivery roles, higher power requirements, and related handshake protocols.

Key Points for Compliance

1. For the 13 regulated product categories, compliance with EN IEC 62680-1-3:2022 is mandatory.

   - If the product’s charging voltage exceeds 5V, current exceeds 3A, or power exceeds 15W, it must comply with both EN IEC 62680-1-2:2022 and EN IEC 62680-1-3:2022.

2. Products outside the scope of the regulation can undergo voluntary certification.
