Want your electrical products to establish a firm foothold in the US market? Then you need to thoroughly understand DOE certification. DOE certification is a mandatory energy efficiency requirement implemented by the US Department of Energy for electrical products, acting as the "admission ticket" for products entering the US market.

What is DOE Certification?

DOE certification, fully known as Department of Energy Certification, is a mandatory certification system implemented by the US Department of Energy (DOE). Its core objectives are: to improve the energy efficiency of electrical products, reduce energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and protect the environment. Simply put, DOE certification sets a "passing grade for energy efficiency" for electrical products; only by meeting this standard can your products be sold in the US market.

Which Products Require DOE Certification?

The scope of products for DOE certification is very broad, covering a variety of household and commercial electrical equipment. For your convenience, we have listed common product categories in the table below:

Product Category

Specific Product Examples

Refrigeration Products

Refrigerators, freezers, ice makers, wine chillers

Kitchen Appliances

Dishwashers, ovens, microwave ovens, cooktops

Laundry Equipment

Washing machines, clothes dryers

Heating and Cooling Equipment

Central air conditioners, heat pumps, water heaters, boilers, furnaces

Lighting Products

Light bulbs (incandescent, halogen, CFL, LED), luminaires

Electric Motors

Single-phase induction motors, polyphase induction motors

Water Pumps

Clean water pumps, circulating pumps, etc.

Transformers

Dry-type transformers, liquid-immersed transformers

Others

External power supplies, battery chargers, televisions, ceiling fans

Commercial Refrigeration Equipment

Refrigerated display cases, vending machines, etc.

Commercial HVAC Equipment

Commercial air conditioners, commercial water heaters, etc.

Commercial Kitchen Equipment

Commercial dishwashers, commercial ovens, etc.

Please note that the table above does not list all products that require DOE certification. The specific product scope and applicable energy efficiency standards will be adjusted according to the regulations of the US Department of Energy.

Main Standards for DOE Certification

DOE certification is primarily based on relevant regulations in the US Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), especially:

  • 10 CFR Part 429: Specifies the sampling, testing, and reporting requirements for certification.

  • 10 CFR Part 430: Specifies the minimum energy efficiency standards for various electrical products.

Within these regulations, you need to focus on various energy efficiency indicators, such as Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER), Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), and Annual Energy Consumption (AEC), among others.

The DOE Certification Process

Want your product to successfully pass DOE certification? Generally, you need to complete the following steps:

  1. Determine the standard: Based on your product type, determine the applicable DOE energy efficiency standard and test method.

  2. Product testing: Send your product to a DOE-recognized laboratory for energy efficiency testing.

  3. Submit data: Submit the test data and related documents to the DOE's ComplianCE certification Management System (CCMS).

  4. Wait for review: The DOE will review the data you submitted.

  5. get certification: If everything goes smoothly, your product will be listed in the DOE certification database and can be legally sold in the US market.

Please note: Be sure to ensure that the test data you submit is true, accurate, and fully complies with DOE requirements.

DOE Certification Fees

The fees for DOE certification mainly include:

  • Testing fees: This fee is paid to the laboratory. The charging standards will vary depending on the laboratory, product type, and specific test items.

  • Service fees: (If applicable).

The DOE itself does not charge application fees or certificate fees. JJR LAB can provide you with a detailed fee estimate and assist you in completing the entire certification process, providing comprehensive energy efficiency solutions.

The DOE Database and Differences from Energy Star

You can check the information of products that have passed DOE certification through the DOE's CCMS database.

To put it simply: DOE certification is a mandatory "baseline," while Energy Star certification is a voluntary "high score list."

To succeed in the US market, geting DOE certification is a crucial first step your product must take.
