Update time : 2025-12-21

As the European market imposes increasingly stringent requirements on the safety, energy efficiency, and environmental protection of lighting products, CE certification has become the "passport" for lighting products to enter the EU market. However, many enterprises still have questions about the process, standards, and details of CE certification. This article sorts out the core points of CE certification for lighting products to help enterprises efficiently access the European market.

What is CE Certification?

CE certification is a safety certification mark and a passport for products to enter the markets of EU member states and European Free Trade Area countries. Products from any country that intend to enter the EU and European Free Trade Area must get CE certification and affix the ce mark on the products to indicate that they meet the basic requirements of the EU New Approach to Technical Harmonization and Standardization directives. This is a mandatory requirement for products under EU law.

Why Do LED Lighting Products Need CE Certification?

ce testing and certification for LED lighting products provides unified technical specifications for trade of products from various countries in the European market, simplifying trade procedures. CE certification indicates that lighting products meet the safety requirements specified in EU directives, serving as a commitment from enterprises to consumers and enhancing consumers' trust in the products. Products with the CE mark will reduce the risks of sales in the European market. Important Note: CE certification must be handled by an EU-authorized notified body.

Common Tests and Standards for Lighting Products (Partial)

CE/EMC

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test standards are divided into two categories: Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) standards and Electromagnetic Susceptibility (EMS) standards. Common test standards are as follows:

• Electromagnetic Interference (General Requirements)

EN 55015, EN 55022, en 61000-3-2/-3

• Electromagnetic Susceptibility (General Requirements)

EN 61000-4-2/-3/-4/-5/-6/-11

CE/LVD

Safety test standards are mainly the EN 60598 series, which is divided into two parts:

1. EN 60598-1: General requirements and tests for luminaires

2. Part 2: Special requirements for dozens of specific types of luminaires

Additional Standards for LED Luminaires with LED Power Modules:

EN 61347-2-13:2006, EN 62031:2008

Scope of Application of IEC 60598-1 Standard

IEC 60598-1 and EN 60598-1 specify the general requirements for luminaires, including electric light sources operating at a supply voltage up to 1000 V.

The requirements and related tests of IEC 60598-1 include classification, marking, mechanical construction, electrical construction, and photobiological safety. Each section of this Part 1 shall be read in conjunction with Section 0 of this document and other relevant referenced sections.

Each part of IEC 60598-2 specifies requirements for specific types or groups of luminaires with a supply voltage not exceeding 1000 V. These parts are published separately for ease of revision, and additional parts will be added as needed.

The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) is considering the provision of photometric data for luminaires, which is therefore not included in this Part 1. These requirements apply to luminaires with ignitors built into the ballast and luminaires with ignitors separate from the ballast. Requirements for luminaires with built-in ignitors are under consideration.

ce certification process for Lighting Products

1. Fill in the Application Form

Submit an application to JJR Testing Laboratory, specifying the product type and required test standards.

2. Provide Documentation and Samples

Fill in the entrusted testing application form and provide product specifications, technical documents, and samples. The quantity and specifications of samples shall meet the requirements of the laboratory.

3. Sample Shipment and Testing

Deliver the products to the laboratory for testing. The test content includes electrical safety, mechanical safety, photobiological safety, etc. (specific items depend on the standards).

4. Completion of Testing and Issuance of Certification

After passing the tests, the laboratory will issue a CE certification report, which includes test results and a conclusion that the product complies with CE standards.
