A packaging and shipping test standard jointly developed by the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) and Amazon. It aims to simULate transportation risks that products may encounter during Amazon's warehousing, sorting, and distribution processes (such as vibration, impact, stacking pressure, temperature and humidity changes, etc.), verify the packaging's ability to protect products, and ensure product integrity during transit.
Amazon classifies packaging into three tiers (Tier 1~Tier 3) and subdivides it into 9 test types (Over-Boxing, SIOC Type A~H) based on product categories:
Tier | Application Scenarios | Typical Products |
Tier 1 (FFP) | Frustration-Free Packaging | Small electronic products, cosmetics, small home appliances |
Tier 2 (SIOC) | Ships in Own Container | Home goods, toys, clothing |
Tier 3 (PFP) | Prep-Free Packaging | Ultra-small products (e.g., button batteries) |
Based on product weight, dimensions, transportation method (express/LTL freight), etc., the test includes the following procedures:
① Purpose: Simulate environmental changes before transportation (e.g., from cold storage to room temperature).
② Standard: Samples are placed at laboratory room temperature (23±2℃, 50±5%RH) for 12 hours.
① Purpose: Simulate transportation vehicle jolting.
② Parameters: Frequency range 5-50 Hz, duration 60 minutes, acceleration spectral density 0.5 Grms (random vibration).
① Purpose: Simulate loading/unloading impacts.
② Method: Free fall (36 inches ≈ 90 cm) with coverage of faces, edges, and corners.
① Purpose: Simulate warehouse stacking pressure.
② Parameters: Apply dynaMIC load (e.g., 5 times the product weight) for 1 hour.
① Types: Inclined impact, horizontal impact, rotational edge drop, etc., depending on product type.
① Purpose: Verify sealing performance to prevent liquid leakage during transportation.
① Provide 3-5 complete packaged samples (consistent with actual sales packaging).
② Packaging must comply with Amazon's size requirements (e.g., SIOC Type A: ≤23 kg, girth ≤165 inches).
Preconditioning → Vibration Test → Drop/Impact Test → Stacking Test → Leakage Test (if applicable)
① Inspect for packaging damage and product breakage.
② Generate a third-party test report that meets Amazon's template requirements.
① Type A: Express transportation (<23 kg), e.g., small electronic products.
② Type D/E: Less Than Truckload (LTL) freight, e.g., furniture, industrial equipment.
③ Type G/H: Specialized for TVs/monitors, subdivided by size.
④ Type A-H: Classified based on product weight and transportation method.
① Application: Ultra-small products with outer packaging dimensions less than 6×4×0.375 inches (e.g., button batteries).
② Test Content: Drop + Vibration to ensure outer packaging protects internal items.
① Basic Test (Small Products): \(598 - \)800 per SKU.
② Complex Test (Large/Precision Products): \(698 - \)1,200 per SKU.
③ Rush Service: 50% additional fee.
Amazon may reject the goods, leading to increased return rates (the damage rate of packages that fail the test can be as high as 30%).
· Solution: Optimize cushioning materials (e.g., increase EPS thickness) and adjust packaging structure.
Prioritize institutions with triple certifications (CNAS/CMA/ISTA) to avoid the risk of fake reports.
There is no mandatory validity period, but it is recommended to update the report every 1-2 years or retest when product design/materials change.
Through ISTA 1A testing, inner lining damage was identified. After optimization, the transportation damage rate decreased from 8.7% to 0.5%.
On the basis of ISTA 1A, additional temperature and humidity cycle tests were conducted. The validation was passed after optimizing the position of the temperature recorder.
ISTA Amazon packaging testing is a core link to ensure product transportation safety, especially crucial for e-commerce sellers. By selecting the appropriate test type, optimizing packaging design, and relying on authoritative laboratories, sellers can significantly REDuce damage rates and return costs, while improving customer satisfaction and platform trust.
