UL 62133 "Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – Safety requirements for portable sealed secondary cells, and for batteries made from them, for use in portable applications" has now been split into two independent volumes (currently effective):
UL 62133-1: Nickel-Metal Hydride / Nickel-Cadmium batteries (Nickel-based)
UL 62133-2: Lithium-ion / Lithium polymer / Lithium coin cells (Lithium-based, most commonly used in foreign trade)
Equivalent adoption of the universally recognized international standard iec 62133, mutually recognized by both the US and Canadian markets. It synchronously evaluates the Cell and the integrated battery PACK with BMS, distinguishing it from ul 2054 (which only tests the battery pack) and ul 1642 (which only tests the cell).
It is a non-mandatory regulation in North America, but it is mandatorily accepted by Amazon, Walmart, offline retailers, and end-product UL certification. The corresponding harmonized standard in the EU is EN 62133 (CE battery compliance).
All portable sealed rechargeable lithium batteries (single cell, multi-series, and multi-parallel PACK integrated testing): 18650 cylindrical, pouch lithium polymer, prismatic small lithium batteries, and coin lithium batteries; headphones, desk lamps, robot vacuums, power tools, small energy storage batteries, built-in lithium batteries for lighting fixtures, and 3C digital replacement battery packs. Evaluates the complete set of cell + protection board (BMS) + enclosure synchronously.
Complete power banks: Exclusively uses ul 2056; cannot be substituted with 62133.
Automotive motive power batteries, large commercial and industrial energy storage: UL 2580 / UL 9540.
Lead-acid batteries, primary lithium metal batteries.
Lasers, high-power specialized medical power supplies.
External short circuit: Short circuit at dual temperatures (room temperature / 55°C), no fire or explosion.
Overcharge test: Continuous overcharging with high current to verify the multiple protections of the BMS.
Forced reverse discharge, single-cell reverse charge.
Limited power, balance protection, terminal short circuit protection.
1-meter free fall drop (3 times).
Heavy impact, 13kN crush test.
Nail penetration internal short circuit (mandatory specific item for lithium batteries).
Three-axis vibration, mechanical shock (simulating logistics transportation).
High and low-temperature cycling: -40°C ~ +70°C.
High-temperature oven thermal abuse at 130°C.
Low-pressure test (simulating high-altitude air transport, 11.6kPa, 6h).
Damp heat aging, long-term high-temperature storage.
Enclosure flame retardance, insulation withstand voltage, wiring harness temperature rise; mandatory specifications for labels, warning statements, and charging parameter annotations in the manual.
Unified Pass Criteria: Throughout the testing, there must be no fire, no explosion, no continuous leakage, and no large-area rupture of the enclosure.
UL 2054: A traditional US domestic standard; cannot test single-cell PACKs.
UL 62133: Transformed from the international IEC standard, applicable to both single-cell and multi-cell battery packs. One report can be used simultaneously for the US, Canada, and EU ce marking.
Doing UL 62133 does not require a separately provided UL 1642 cell certificate. Laboratories can test the cell synchronously, resulting in lower costs and a more simplified process.
Advantage: Single-cell batteries cannot undergo UL 2054; they can only use UL 62133.
Scheme: EN 62133 (equivalent to the UL 62133 testing system) + ce-lvd
Scheme: Cell UL 1642 + Battery Pack UL 2054
