Humidifier CSA C22.2 No.104 Standard Testing

Recently, many friends exporting to North America have asked me: "When launching humidifiers in North America, what exactly needs to be tested under the CSA C22.2 No.104 standard? The online information is too outdated, and what has changed in the new 2020 version of the standard?"

Indeed, many factories are still using ten-year-old reports to apply to new products, resulting in frequent rejections during certification. Today, we will dig deep into this "birth certificate" for North American humidifiers—the CSA C22.2 No.104 standard—to help you clarify the latest testing logic and pitfalls to avoid.

Key Takeaway: The CSA C22.2 No.104 standard underwent a major revision in 2020. The currently effective version has been split into general requirements and particular requirements (such as the separate volume for ultrasonic types). If you are still designing based on the old standard, you will likely fail from the very beginning.

Protection Against Electric Shock and "Interior Wiring" Inspection (Structural Safety)

This is the most basic threshold, mainly checking whether the user will get electrocuted when adding water or cleaning.

  • Enclosure Protection (IP Testing): Simulates whether water will slip in and touch the wiring when you spill or pour water.

  • Internal Wiring Inspection: Just like checking the plumbing and electrical wiring of a house, this checks whether the internal wires are firmly fixed and whether there is a risk of them being cut by sharp edges.

  • Capacitor Discharge Testing: The moment the plug is pulled, no lethal voltage can remain on the pins (must drop below 34V within 1 second) to prevent electric shock when touching the plug pins.

Heating and "Stress" Testing (Temperature Rise and Abnormalities)

Humidifiers are often left on all night. Will long-term operation cause overheating and catch fire?

  • Normal Temperature Rise: Operates with a full tank of water at an ambient temperature of around 25°C to monitor the temperature of the motor and coils. Key Point: The coil temperature rise usually cannot exceed 75K (referring to the value above the ambient temperature).

  • Abnormality Simulation (The Ultimate Test): This is the most critical quality test. The laboratory will simulate extreme situations such as dry heating without water, a jammed fan, or the air inlet/outlet being blocked by a blanket. Standard Requirement: Open flames are absolutely not allowed!

Humidifier-Specific "Water Immersion Test" (Leakage and Overflow)

This is a special testing point that distinguishes humidifiers from ordinary home appliances.

  • Tilt Testing: Simulates a child accidentally knocking over the machine by tilting it 10 degrees forward, backward, left, and right; water must not flow into live parts.

  • Overflow Testing: Simulates a poorly installed water tank where water spills all over the table. In this case, it must be guaranteed that water will not flow along the gaps into the motor or main control board.

  • Water Tank Lifespan: Repeatedly filling and draining water (e.g., 1,000 cycles) to check whether the sealing rings will age and leak.

High-Voltage Shock Testing (Electrical Insulation)

This is a standard but mandatory hard metric that must be passed.

  • Dielectric Voltage-Withstand Testing: A high voltage of 1000V + 2 times the rated voltage (usually no less than 1500V) is applied between live parts and the enclosure for 1 minute. It only passes if there is no breakdown.

  • Leakage Current: During normal use, the leakage current of the machine enclosure is usually required to be less than 0.5mA; this value is stricter than the standards for many medical devices.

Burning and Deformation (Material Heat and Flame Resistance)

To prevent the spread of fire, the plastic enclosure and internal supporting parts must pass the test.

  • Glow-Wire Testing: Uses a high-temperature glow wire at 550°C or even 750°C to burn the plastic parts. It only passes if it can self-extinguish within 30 seconds after removing the heat source.

  • Ball Pressure Testing: Heats the plastic supporting live parts to 125°C and presses a steel ball on it. The deformation cannot exceed 2mm to prevent short circuits caused by high-temperature softening.

The Invisible "Bacteria" and "Mist"

The strictest part of the new standard lies in its focus on health risks, which is especially important for ultrasonic humidifiers.

  • Microbial Growth Assessment: If your water tank material is prone to mold growth, or if the structure has hard-to-clean dead corners, unfortunately, it fails.

  • Material Restrictions and Prohibitions: Explicitly prohibits the use of certain harmful substances (such as asbestos and specific heavy metals).

  • Ultrasonic Stability: For ultrasonic (ultrasonic and impeller type) humidifiers, the atomizing piece (transducer) must be corrosion-resistant, and the mist output must be stable and up to standard.

Obtaining the CSA C22.2 No.104 certification is not just about buying a sticker; it is a comprehensive physical examination of the product's safety design. In particular, the newly added microbiological requirements in the 2020 version have raised the threshold from "electrical safety" to the level of "respiratory health."
