Definition of Lithium Batteries

A lithium battery is a rechargeable power source that uses lithium ions to store and release energy. It is characterized by being lightweight, powerful, and long-lasting, primarily providing power for devices such as smartphones and electric vehicles.

Policy Scope of Application

This policy applies to lithium batteries, including replacement batteries that match the primary batteries in devices, covering various single-cell and multi-cell battery packs for consumer / industrial use.

Covered Products:

  • Rechargeable lithium storage batteries

  • Lithium-ion / Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries

  • LiPo / Lithium polymer rechargeable batteries

  • LiFePO4 / Lithium iron phosphate rechargeable batteries

  • Rechargeable lithium-ion button/coin cell batteries

  • Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used for specified devices

This Policy Does Not Include:

  • Lithium-ion batteries applicable to electric personal mobility devices.

Applicable Laws, Regulations, and Standards

Lithium batteries must comply with any one of the following safety standards:

  • ul 1642 (Safety Standard for Lithium Batteries)

  • ANSI/CAN/ul 1973 (Standard for Batteries for Use in Stationary and Motive Auxiliary Power Applications)

  • ul 2054 (Safety Standard for Household and Commercial Batteries)

  • UL/ULC 2271 (Standard for Batteries for Use In Light Electric Vehicle [LEV] Applications)

  • UL/ULC 2580 (Standard for Batteries for Use in Electric Vehicles)

  • UL/CSA C22.2 NO.62133-2 (Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline / non-acid electrolytes — Safety requirements for lithium systems)

Simultaneously must comply with:

  • un 38.3 (Transportation Testing for Lithium-Ion Batteries)

Amazon Compliance Requirements

1. Mandatory Information for Product Detail Pages

Product Information Attributes:

  • Model, part number, or product number

  • Manufacturer or brand name

  • Applicable warning statements (hazard warnings)

  • Compliance information

2. Compliance Verification Process

Amazon's compliance verification replaces the direct submission of documents by sellers. It must be completed through cooperative third-party testing, inspection, and certification service providers.

  • If you have existing compliance documents:

  • Submit the documents to an Amazon-partnered third-party testing agency.

  • The agency reviews whether they meet policy requirements.

  • Note: Test results from non-partnered laboratories must be verified by an Amazon-partnered agency.

  • If you have no existing documents / need new product testing:

  • Send the products to a third-party testing agency (JJR LAB).

  • Complete the testing according to the applicable standards.

  • The agency directly submits the documents / test results to Amazon.

3. Testing and Supervision

  • Products may be subject to regular testing or additional evaluations. Notifications will be sent to your Account Health page.

  • If a product fails testing / document verification, it will be immediately suspended from sale and will remain in a suspended state until compliance is submitted.

4. Document Submission Requirements

Mandatory Documents:

  • A test report issued by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory within the past 12 months, proving compliance with any of the aforementioned safety standards.

  • UN 38.3 Test Report.

  • BTS (Battery Test Summary), proving that UN 38.3 requirements are met.

  • Document Result Requirements: Only "Pass" or "Not Applicable" are accepted. "Fail," "Non-compliant," "Does not comply," or blank results are not accepted.

Mandatory Images:

  • Model, part number, or product number

  • Name and address of the manufacturer, importer, distributor, or authorized representative

  • Product label

  • Product instructions and manuals

  • Compliance marks

  • Hazard warnings

Amazon Prohibited Products (Lithium Battery Category)

Amazon strictly prohibits the listing / selling of the following products that pose safety risks:

Various types of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries (32650/32700, 28600, 26700, 26650, 20700, 21700, 22650, 26500, 18650, 18500, 17670, 18350, 16340, 14500, 10440):

  • Standalone batteries / Single-cell batteries

  • Multi-cell battery packs (assembled / unassembled)

  • Standalone battery devices

  • Replacement / backup cells or battery packs

  • Products containing the above restricted batteries

Reasons for Prohibition:

These pose safety risks such as external short circuits, overcharging, over-discharging, thermal runaway, and poor thermal management.
