What is Japan PSE Certification?

About PSE

PSE (Product Safety of Electrical Appliance & Materials) certification, known in Japan as "適合性検査" (Conformity Inspection), is a mandatory certification system implemented under Japan’s Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act (DENAN). It regULates the safety of electrical products entering the Japanese market.

According to the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act, electrical products are divided into two categories:

Specified Electrical Appliances and Materials | Diamond-shaped pse mark

These are mandatory certification products. They must be tested and certified by a third-party certification body authorized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan. The product must obtain a certificate of conformity and display the diamond-shaped PSE mark along with compliance to relevant legal requirements before being allowed to enter the Japanese market.

Non-specified Electrical Appliances and Materials | Circular PSE Mark

These are voluntary certification products. Manufacturers can provide their own test and inspection reports. As long as the product complies with the relevant requirements of the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act, it may carry the circular PSE mark.

PSE Japan Representative

After obtaining the PSE certification for electrical products, a local Japanese representative (Notifying Supplier) must submit an application to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and complete the registration of the representative entity and related tasks before the product can be legally sold in the Japanese market.
