What is EN iec 60598-1:2021?

EN IEC 60598-1:2021 is the first in a multi-part series of European standards that specify safety requirements for electrical luminaires or lighting fixtures.

Part 2 contains approximately 20 standards, each dealing with a specific type of luminaire, while Part 1—EN IEC 60598-1:2021—covers the general requirements and tests applicable to all luminaires.

Who Needs to Know About EN IEC 60598-1:2021?

  1. Lighting equipment manufacturers

  2. Lighting product distributors

  3. Testing and certification bodies

  4. Interior and lighting designers

EN IEC 60598-1:2021 Overview

This is the ultimate safety standard for luminaires. It specifies the basic electrical safety and performance requirements for all types of electrical luminaires, as well as the requirements for their design, construction, testing, and performance.

It covers all common types of luminaires and is intended to be used in conjunction with the Part 2 standards, each of which customizes the general requirements for a specific type of luminaire.

What is New in EN IEC 60598-1:2021?

The last full version of this standard was published in 2014, with the final amendment made in 2016. BS EN IEC 60598-1:2021 incorporates over 34 significant changes, reflecting product development and technological advancements since then.

The most important changes include:

  • a. Changes in marking requirements

  • b. New blue light hazard assessment

  • c. New requirements for "Power over Ethernet" (PoE) systems

  • d. New requirements for LED luminaires and luminaires with constant light/constant current control gear

  • e. New EMF (Electromagnetic Fields) requirements

  • f. New/modified structural requirements: Fixing covers, cord anchorages, functional and protective earthing, appliance inlets, IPX9, wall-mounted luminaires, recessed luminaires, fast-rotating parts, and the use of bridging capacitors.

  • New/modified test procedures: DC electric strength test, leakage current, gland torque test, and tumbling test.

IEC 60598-1 Scope

The IEC 60598-1 and EN 60598-1 tests specify general requirements for luminaires, incorporating electric light sources for operation from supply voltages up to 1000 V. The requirements and related tests of IEC 60598-1 cover: classification, marking, mechanical construction, electrical construction, and photobiological safety.

Each section of this Part 1 is to be read in conjunction with Section 0 and other relevant reference sections.

Each part of IEC 60598-2 details requirements for a particular type of luminaire or group of luminaires operating on supply voltages not exceeding 1000 V. These parts are published separately for ease of revision, and additional sections will be added as and when a need is recognized.

The presentation of photometric data for luminaires is under consideration by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and is therefore not included in this Part 1.

These requirements apply to luminaires with ignitors built into ballasts and to luminaires with ignitors separate from ballasts. Requirements for luminaires with ignitors built into the lamps are currently under consideration.
