Recently, many sellers on Amazon US and Canada have received emails regarding updates to compliance requirements for the "Electric Transportation Devices" and "Electric Transportation Device Accessories" categories. Please stay informed!

Important Note: The definitions and testing requirements for electric transportation devices in the US and Canada are similar but not identical. Sellers offering these products should read carefully.

If you sell electric transportation devices on Amazon US, please monitor your email for compliance notifications. Failure to submit the required compliance documents by the deadline may result in product removal.

Definition of Electric Transportation Devices

Electric transportation devices refer to small, low-speed electric mobility products, including electric-assisted bicycles (e-bikes), electric scooters, and other small, lightweight, wheeled electric transport tools.

Note: This policy does not apply to electric transportation devices intended for children.

Types of Electric Transportation Devices:

Self-Balancing Scooter

A self-balancing scooter, also known as an automatic balancing electric scooter, consists of two wheels connected by a platform on which the user stands. Riders control movement by shifting their feet forward or backward.

Self-Balancing Unicycle

A self-balancing unicycle integrates sensors and an electric motor to help the rider maintain balance. This device has no handlebars. It is also referred to as a one-wheel scooter.

Electric Skateboard

An electric skateboard has four wheels, a battery pack, and a power system to provide additional torque for movement. Some electric skateboards come with handheld remote controls for adjusting speed.

Electric Scooter

An electric scooter is a powered transportation device with two or more wheels, a deck, a vertical handlebar for gripping, and a steering mechanism. There are various types, including foldable scooters, scooters with seats, and rideable scooters like lightweight electric mopeds. These devices have a limited travel range and a maximum speed of 64.4 km/h (40 mph).

Self-Balancing Personal Transporter

Self-balancing transporters may have one or two wheels. They are powered by rechargeable battery packs, and riders maintain balance by shifting their weight.

Electric Bicycles & Electric Tricycles

Electric bicycles and electric tricycles are pedal-assisted electric bicycles used for personal transportation. They are equipped with fully functional pedals and an electric motor that assists propulsion. The motor power is under 250W, and the maximum assisted speed does not exceed 25 km/h (15.5 mph).

Regulatory Requirements

Amazon requires all electric transportation devices to be tested and comply with the following regulations, standards, and requirements:

- Self-Balancing Scooters: Must comply with ANSI/CAN/UL 2272 (Standard for Electrical Systems for Personal E-Mobility Devices).

- Self-Balancing Unicycles: Must comply with ANSI/CAN/UL 2272 (Standard for Electrical Systems for Personal E-Mobility Devices).

- Self-Balancing Personal Transporters: Must comply with ANSI/CAN/UL 2272 (Standard for Electrical Systems for Personal E-Mobility Devices).

- Electric Tricycles: Must comply with ANSI/CAN/UL 2272 (Standard for Electrical Systems for Personal E-Mobility Devices).

- Electric Bicycles: Must comply with 16 CFR Part 1512 (Bicycle Requirements) and ANSI/CAN/UL 2849 (Standard for Electrical Systems for E-Bikes).

Note: The state of New York requires all electric bicycles to comply with the UL 2849 standard.
