Update time : 2025-02-25

For an electric bicycle to enter the U.S. market, it must comply with the UL 2849 safety standard.

The UL 2849 standard covers product safety, battery management systems (BMS), software evaluation, and functional safety assessment requirements. Additionally, it includes safety requirements for components such as controllers, motors, and chargers.

The introduction and implementation of the UL 2849 standard ensure higher quality and performance for electric bicycles while aligning with the global movement towards low-carbon, eco-friendly transportation.

Which Components of an Electric Bicycle Require UL certification?

What are the corresponding UL standards for these key components?

- Complete Bicycle – UL 2849

- Lithium Battery – UL 2271

- Battery Cells – UL 2580

- Connectors – UL 2238/1977

- Motor – UL 1004-1 or random testing

- Controller – UL 2849

How to Apply for UL Certification for an Electric Bicycle?

The steps to apply for UL certification for an electric bicycle are as follows:

1. Provide Product Information – Submit relevant product details, including the application form, product specifications, and basic electrical parameters. If multiple models are involved, provide a document explaining model differences.

2. Confirm Certification Plan and Quotation – The company reviews and agrees to the UL certification plan and pricing.

3. Set Up a UL Certification Test Project – JJR Laboratory in China establishes a ul testing project.

4. Send Samples for Testing – Ship the requiRED product samples to JJR Laboratory for UL testing.

5. Review the ul report – The company verifies the ul test report.

6. Completion and Certification Issuance – The UL certification is issued upon successful completion of the process.
