What are Bedside Sleepers Cribs?

Also known as bedside sleepers, they are rigid frame assemblies that attach to an adult bed, designed to provide a sleeping environment for infants.
The rigid frame of a bedside sleeper may be combined with fabric, mesh components, or both, forming the sides, ends, floor, or any combination thereof.

What is the purpose of the Bedside Sleepers Cribs Standard?

The standard aims to minimize the risk of death and injury associated with bedside sleeper use, including hazards related to entrapment, suffocation, structural integrity, product assembly, and insufficient consumer education on proper use.

CPSC Regulations, Standards & Test Methods

16 CFR Part 1222: Safety Standard for Bedside Sleepers

ASTM F2906: Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bedside Sleepers

Requirements for Bedside Sleepers Cribs

ASTM standards define performance, testing, and labeling requirements for infant bedside sleepers. Key provisions of ASTM F2906 include:

Compliance with ASTM F2194 (Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bassinets and Cradles) to meet basic safety requirements: suffocation, stability, small parts, entrapment, shear, unintended folding, loading, side height, and sharp edges.

Multi-mode products: Prevent hazards when used as play yards, bassinets, changing tables, or carriers.

Minimum side height for lower side: Prevent infant falls.

Attachment security: Ensure stable fastening to avoid falls or entrapment.

Enclosed fabric side openings: Prevent entrapment and suffocation hazards.

Sleeper components (sleep surface collaPSE / incline): Prevent improper assembly that could cause suffocation or entrapment due to missing structural elements.

Warnings: Alert caregivers to risks of falls, entrapment, and suffocation.

16 CFR Part 1222 includes modifications to ASTM F2906-13 to align with bassinet standards (16 CFR Part 1218) when tested per ASTM F2194:

Change in angle limit for segmented mattress flatness test (10 degrees per federal standard).

Revised stability test procedures for increased stringency and real‑world applicability.

New requirements and test procedures addressing stability hazards for products with removable bassinets.

Additional Requirements Under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (cpsia)

Bedside sleepers must comply with requirements for surface coatings, lead content, testing & certification, registration cards, and tracking labels.

1. Surface Coating Limit

Bedside sleepers must not use paint with lead content exceeding 0.009%.

2. Total Lead Limit

Total lead content in any accessible component shall not exceed 100 ppm (0.01%).

3. Phthalate Limit

Plasticized components shall not contain more than 0.1% of 8 designated phthalates:

 DEHP (Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate)

 DBP (Dibutyl phthalate)

 BBP (Benzyl butyl phthalate)

 DINP (Diisononyl phthalate)

 DIBP (Diisobutyl phthalate)

 DPENP (Di-n-pentyl phthalate)

 DHEXP (Di-n-hexyl phthalate)

 DCHP (Dicyclohexyl phthalate)

Testing & Certification

Like all children’s products intended for children 12 years or younger, bedside sleepers must be tested by a CPSC-accepted third-party laboratory for compliance with applicable standards.
The U.S. manufacturer or importer must issue a
Children’s Product Certificate (CPC) based on testing.

Product & Packaging Labeling

Durable infant products such as bedside sleepers require permanent labeling including tracking labels on both product and packaging.
Additional product markings and a
product registration card must be attached to the product.

Bedside sleepers are widely used and accepted in U.S. households for convenience. However, unsafe or defective products can lead to infant injury or death, making safety testing and compliance critical.
JJR LAB provides comprehensive testing and product evaluation services in accordance with 16 CFR Part 1222.
