Sellers engaged in Amazon and cross-border export business have most likely been asked by freight forwarders or platforms to provide an msds. Many people mistakenly think it is a test report and casually find a template online to cope with the requirement, only to regret it deeply when their product listing is removed or their cargo is detained!
MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet. Under the global GHS standard system, its official standard name is now SDS (Safety Data Sheet). Both terms are used interchangeably within the industry.
Key Distinction: SDS is NOT a test report! It is a standardized compliance document equivalent to a chemical product's "safety file + emergency instruction manual." Comprising 16 fixed sections, it clearly records product risk, protection, first aid, storage and transport, and regulatory information. It serves as a statutory document to communicate chemical hazard information.
1.Products with Lithium Batteries: Learning tablets, electric mops, power banks, electric toys, robot vacuums, Bluetooth headsets (Mandatory check for Amazon Hazmat review and air/ocean freight forwarders; often paired with un38.3 and Transport Classification Reports).
2.Liquids / Sprays: Cleaners, disinfectants, aromatherapy liquids, nail polishes, glues, inks, coatings, lubricants, resins, and other chemical mixtures.
3.Other Chemical Products Governed by GHS.
Finished goods without hazardous chemical components, such as pure hardware, ordinary fabrics, raw wood parts, and plastic parts without chemical coatings.
Supplementary Reminder: Even if a product does not require an SDS domestically, platforms and carriers have the right to request one when listing on Amazon Europe/US or shipping via international air/sea freight. Once categorized as Hazmat (Hazardous Materials), a listing will be locked and FBA inventory intake refused immediately without an SDS.
1.Information Collection: Customers provide the product name, model number, brand, complete chemical composition + CAS numbers, product photos, application scenarios, and target markets (e.g., EU CLP / US HCS).
2.Drafting: Engineers retrieve data, determine hazard classifications, and draft the complete 16-section document according to the GHS regulations of the corresponding region.
3.Issuance: Provide Chinese and English PDF versions. The product name and model number must match the Amazon Listing exactly.
4.Validity: Valid for 1 year by default (requirements vary by platform). Whenever the formula or ingredients change, the document must be re-drafted and updated.
Pitfall Warning: Generic low-cost templates online carry extremely high risks! If the composition, hazard classification, or UN transport information does not match the actual physical product, passing the initial review may just be lucky—a secondary re-check will result in direct listing removal, cargo detention, and shipment rejection.
Product name, model, brand, manufacturer information, emergency contact number. Amazon strictly cross-checks: the model and product name must be completely consistent with the Listing.
GHS hazard classification, hazard pictograms, signal words (Danger / Warning), hazard statements, and precautionary statements. Platforms and freight forwarders assess the hazard level of the product through this section.
All hazardous components in the product, their corresponding CAS numbers, and concentration ranges. This is a major disaster area for template failures—the components must match the physical product.
First-aid procedures and contraindications following skin contact, eye contact, inhalation, or accidental ingestion.
Suitable / unsuitable extinguishing media, hazardous combustion products, and firefighting protection requirements (lithium battery sections must specifically state water spraying is prohibited).
Spill isolation methods, cleanup procedures, and measures to prevent soil and water contamination.
Safe handling precautions and storage environment requirements: temperature, light avoidance, keeping away from heat sources, etc.
Occupational exposure limits, and personal protective equipment such as safety goggles, gloves, and masks required during operation.
Physical and chemical parameters including appearance, color, pH, flash point, density, and solubility.
Whether the product is stable; incompatible materials, and hazardous trigger conditions (crushing, puncturing, high temperatures, etc.). Lithium batteries must specifically note that puncturing and crushing will trigger thermal runaway.
Toxicological data such as acute toxicity, irritation, and sensitization of the components, cited from authoritative literature without needing separate testing.
Ecotoxicity to aquatic organisms, degradability, and environmental hazard statements of the components.
Compliant disposal methods for the product and packaging, distinguishing between general waste and hazardous waste.
UN number, Proper Shipping Name, Hazard Class, Packing Group, and air/sea transport restrictions. Information in this section for battery-type SDS must align completely with UN38.3 and Transport Classification Reports; conflicting information leads to immediate rejection.
Lists the governing regulations followed during drafting: US HCS 2012 / EU CLP Regulation, matched according to the customer's sales region.
Preparation date, revision records, and disclaimers. Revision dates must be updated whenever formula changes occur.
Many sellers view an SDS as merely a document to bypass platform reviews, but in reality, it is a core document scrutinized by logistics, customs, and platforms alike. Especially for the lithium battery category, the trio of SDS, UN38.3, and Air/Sea Transport Identification Reports is standard equipment for shipping.
