Introduction to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)

PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) are also known as Polyaromates or Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons. They are a group of chemical substances formed during the incomplete combustion of coal, oil, gas, wood, garbage, or other organic matter, encompassing over 100 different types. They can be extracted and used as plasticizers. Some of them, such as Benzo(a)pyrene, are classified as carcinogens, while others are suspected carcinogens.

Sixteen Types of PAH Compounds

There are over 100 types and 10,000 different PAH compounds. The vast majority of PAHs do not exist independently in the environment; they are often found as mixtures of two or more PAHs. There are 16 PAHs suspected of having carcinogenic effects that have been officially restricted or banned.

Category

Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP)

Sum of 16 PAHs

Category 1:

Materials in contact with food, or articles and toys intended to be put in the mouth by children under 3 years of age.

Not detectable*

(< 0.2 mg/kg)

Not detectable*

(< 0.2 mg/kg)

Category 2:

Plastics, parts with frequent skin contact, parts with a skin contact time exceeding 30 seconds, and toys not specified in Category 1.

1 mg/kg

10 mg/kg

Category 3:

Plastics, parts with occasional contact (i.e., parts with a skin contact time of less than 30 seconds), or parts with no skin contact.

20 mg/kg

200 mg/kg

* If the test results exceed Category 1 limits but comply with Category 2 limits, further testing must be conducted according to the migration test specifications of DIN EN 1186 and §64 LFGB 80.30-1 to confirm the final results.
