Recently, Amazon Canada removed a large number of electric kettle products because they coULd not provide test reports in compliance with CSA C22.1.

 

The Canadian kettle market has huge growth potential on Amazon Canada. However, for many sellers, meeting Canadian regulatory requirements can be a major challenge. Today, we will explain SOR/2016-181 (the Kettle Regulation) in detail to help you tackle the Canadian market with confidence!

 

Amazon Canada’s Regulatory Requirements for Kettles

(1) Plug-in Kettles

Plug-in kettles must comply with the requirements of SOR/2016-181 (Kettle Regulation)and be certified under CSA C22.1. Before selling products on Amazon Canada, you must have them tested by a third-party laboratory and obtain the corresponding certification.

 

About SOR/2016-181 and CSA C22.1

① SOR/2016-181: A regulation established by the Canadian government that specifies safety requirements and testing methods for kettles.

② CSA C22.1: A product standard developed by the Canadian Standards Association. It covers requirements for kettle design, manufacturing, testing, and labeling.

 

(2) Non-Plug-in Kettles

Non-plug-in kettles must also comply with SOR/2016-181 (Kettle Regulation).

 

If your kettle does not pass SOR/2016-181 testing, you cannot sell it on Amazon Canada.

 

What is CSA C22.1?

CSA C22.1 Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CE Code)applies to all voltages of electrical work and electrical equipment. Its purpose is to establish safety standards for the installation and maintenance of electrical devices, addressing risks such as:

 

① Electric shock

② Fire hazards

③ Thermal effects

④ Overcurrent

⑤ Fault currents

⑥ Overvoltage

 

Documentation RequiRED for SOR/2016-181 (Kettle Regulation) Testing

When applying for compliance testing, you must submit the following:

 

1. Clear product images showing:

① Product labels

② Relevant safety information

③ Compliance marks

④ Hazard warnings

⑤ All sides of the product and packaging

2. Proof that the product in the images matches both the tested product and the product listing page

3. User manual, safety information, labels, and warnings in both English and French

4. Model number, part number, or product number

5. Manufacturer’s or private label distributor’s name and address

6. Product manual and documentation

7. A test report issued by an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory, confirming compliance with the above regulations and standards

1. Fill out the application form

2. Provide product samples

3. Arrange product testing

4. Receive draft test results if compliant

5. Confirm final certification documents
