UL 588 Test Report for Christmas Light Strings

Views :
Update time : 2025-06-03

As seasonal decorative light strings gain popULarity in global markets, their safety has become a growing concern. UL 588 is the safety standard established by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in the United States for seasonal and festive decorative lighting products. It primarily applies to temporary-use light strings, such as Christmas lights and holiday decorations, with a maximum input voltage of 120V and a usage period not exceeding 90 days.

Core Contents of the UL 588 Standard

1. Scope of Application

Applicable Products:

Seasonal decorative lighting products including Christmas light strings, tree lights, icicle lights, light strips, and solar-poweRED decorative lights. These must be for temporary use and operate at ≤120V.

Excluded Products:

Non-seasonal lighting products such as rope lights (UL 2388), night lights (UL 1786), and general household lamps (UL 153).

2. Key Safety Requirements

A. Electrical Safety:

Insulation materials must be flame-retardant and high-temperature resistant. Grounding must comply with power rating requirements.

B. Fire Resistance:

Plastic components must pass the 4-inch vertical flame test (UL 1694 SC-0/SC-1 rating).

C. Mechanical Performance:

Products must undergo stress testing on wires, drop testing, and cold impact tests to ensure structural integrity.

3. Special Requirements on Amazon

Amazon requires submission of a test report from an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. The report must include product labeling, plug details, and the UL file number. Non-compliant products will be removed from the platform.

UL 588 is not only a market access threshold but also a reflection of a company’s product safety capabilities. As compliance requirements for cross-border e-commerce continue to strengthen, early certification planning and working with reputable laboratories (such as those accredited with ISO 17025) are key to capturing the holiday economy opportunities in North America.

Difference Between UL certification and Test Report

UL Certification:

Requires a factory audit and is suitable for brands with long-term ambitions in the North American market.

Test Report:

Focuses solely on product safety. The process is quicker (5–7 days) and is essential for Amazon approval.

Amazon UL 588 Compliance Process

1. Customer provides product images and fills out an application form.

2. Quotation is given based on circuit diagrams, user manuals, and other materials.

3. Upon confirmation, a contract is signed, testing fees are paid, and test samples are prepared.

4. Customer ships samples to JJR Laboratory in China for testing.

5. If testing is successful, a report is issued.(Usually within 5–7 working days.)
