The EU's EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) qualification is one of the mandatory certifications for electrical and electronic products to enter the European market, ensuring that the equipment is neither subject to external electromagnetic interference nor causes interference to other equipment. Currently, electrified products listed on European sites such as Amazon, TEMU, and SHEIN all need to submit the EU electrical ce-emc (Electric) qualification, and have the ce mark pasted on the outer packaging and on the product.

What is CE-EMC (Electric)?

The CE-EMC (Electric) qualification refers to the compliance qualification that electrical and electronic equipment meets the EU Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC for short) refers to the ability of equipment to operate normally in its electromagnetic environment while not generating intolerable electromagnetic interference to other equipment in that environment. The EU EMC Directive (Directive 2014/30/EU) applies to equipment placed on the market and supplied on the market. Equipment is defined as any "apparatus" or "fixed installation", with separate regulations respectively.

"Apparatus" refers to any finished appliance or combination thereof commercially available on the market as a single functional unit, intended for the end user, and liable to generate electromagnetic interference, or the performance of which is liable to be affected by such interference; "fixed installation" refers to a particular combination of several types of apparatus and, where applicable, other devices, which are assembled, installed and intended to be used permanently at a predefined location.

The EU EMC Directive does not cover the following equipment:

  • Equipment not containing electrical or electronic components;

  • Equipment covered by the eu red directive;

  • Aeronautical products and radio equipment intended for use by radio amateurs, except for special exceptions;

  • Equipment for which electromagnetic compatibility requirements are wholly or partly laid down more specifically by other Union legislation;

  • Equipment which is inherently benign in terms of electromagnetic compatibility.

What are the test items of CE-EMC?

EMC contains two parts: EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) and EMS (Electromagnetic Susceptibility).

  • EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) is the electromagnetic noise generated by the machine itself during the process of performing its intended functions that is detrimental to other systems;

  • EMS (Electromagnetic Susceptibility) refers to the ability of the machine not to be affected by the surrounding electromagnetic environment during the process of performing its intended functions.

1. EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) includes:

  • RE: (Radiated emission)

  • CE: (Conducted emission)

2. EMS (Electromagnetic Susceptibility) includes:

  • RS: (Radiated Susceptibility)

  • CS: (Conducted Susceptibility)

  • ESD: (Electrostatic discharge)

  • EFT: (Electrical fast transient burst)

  • SURGE: Lightning (surge) immunity

What are the test standards of CE-EMC?

  1. EN55011 — Measurement methods and limits of radio-frequency interference for industrial, scientific, and medical radio-frequency apparatus;

  2. EN55013 — Measurement methods and limits of radiated interference for broadcast receivers and associated apparatus;

  3. EN55014 — Measurement methods and limits of radio-frequency interference for devices such as motor-operated appliances;

  4. EN55020 — Immunity of broadcast receivers and associated apparatus;

  5. en55032 — Measurement methods and limits of radio-frequency interference for information technology equipment;

  6. EN55035 — Immunity of information technology equipment;

  7. EN55015 — Measurement methods and limits of radio-frequency interference for lighting products;

  8. EN61547 — Anti-interference of lighting products.

  9. Commercial, industrial, and light industrial (including household):
    (1) en61000-6-3 — Generic emission standard;
    (2) EN61000-6-1 — Generic immunity standard;

  10. Manufacturing environment:
    (1) EN61000-6-4 — Generic emission standard;
    (2) EN61000-6-2 — Generic anti-interference standard;

What is the CE-EMC application process?

  1. Determine the applicable scope of the product: According to the product type, determine the EMC directives and standards that need to be met.

  2. Select test standards: Determine the emc test standards the product should follow.

  3. Select a testing agency: Choose the qualified JJR Laboratory to conduct emc testing.

  4. Submit samples and technical data: Provide product samples and related technical documents, such as circuit diagrams, manuals, etc., for the testing agency to evaluate.

  5. Conduct testing: The testing agency conducts radiated emission and immunity testing on the product according to EMC standards.

  6. Obtain test report: After the test is passed, the testing agency issues an EMC test report.

  7. CE mark: After passing EMC certification, the enterprise can affix the CE mark on the product and prepare the product Declaration of Conformity (DoC).
