The ce marking is a mandatory legal mark for products entering the European Economic Area (EEA). It signifies that a product complies with EU requirements for safety, health, and environmental protection. Products without the ce marking may not be placed on the market in the EU, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and other relevant countries.
• The CE marking is not a third-party certificate, but a self-declaration of compliance by the manufacturer. The manufacturer bears full responsibility for product conformity.
• Applicable regions: 27 EU member states and other EEA countries; mandatory for certain product categories in Turkey.
• Products bearing the CE mark may circulate freely within the EEA. Importers are required to verify compliance, and sales under private labeling are deemed the manufacturer’s responsibility.
A single product may fall under multiple directives and must satisfy all of them before the CE mark can be affixed.
Applies to toys intended for children under 14 years old, in compliance with the Toy Safety Directive, passing tests including mechanical, flammability, and heavy metal analyses.
Covers the widest range of products, requiring compliance with directives such as RoHS, LVD, EMC, and RED.
Includes mobile phones, computers, chargers, lighting equipment, Bluetooth headsets, etc.
Safety helmets, protective gloves, safety shoes, goggles, gas masks, etc. High-risk categories require certification by a Notified Body.
Treadmills, electric tools, production line equipment, electric bicycles, etc., are all included.
Medical masks, syringes, thermometers, ventilators, implantable devices, etc., regulated according to risk classification.
Doors and windows, fire-resistant materials, sanitary ware, adhesives, etc., must be accompanied by a Declaration of Performance (DoP).
Gas appliances, measuring instruments, lifts, explosion-proof equipment, recreational craft, pressure equipment, hot water boilers, etc.
The following products are not within the mandatory scope; affixing the CE mark in violation constitutes fraud:
• Chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics
• Food, beverages, agricultural products
• Ordinary clothing, home textiles (non-toy, non-protective categories)
• Antiques, purely handcrafted products
• Products for personal use, not for sale
• R&D prototypes, experimental products
Products exempt from CE marking still must comply with the EU General Product Safety Directive.
1. Identify the applicable EU directives for the product
2. Complete testing and conformity assessment; Notified Body involvement is required for high-risk products
3. Compile and retain technical documentation for at least 10 years
4. Sign the EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC)
5. Affix the CE marking clearly and permanently, with letter height no less than 5mm

• Product sales ban and mandatory recall
• Heavy fines
• Criminal liability in serious cases
• Listing as non-compliant and disqualification from the European market
• The CE marking has no fixed validity period; reassessment is required if the product or applicable standards change
• Following Brexit, the UK has introduced the ukca marking, while the CE marking is still currently recognized
• Handmade and custom products sold into the EEA must still meet CE requirements
