Almost all lighting and home appliance sellers on the Amazon and Temu North American sites have fallen into the pitfalls of UL compliance: listings being rejected by the platform right after uploading, spending money on a report only to fail the review, failing to distinguish between a ul report and UL certification (thus wasting thousands of dollars in budget), or having products taken down directly for missing matching driver standards. UL is a strict threshold for listing electrical products in North America. Without a valid UL report for lighting and small home appliances, minor consequences include listing removal, while severe consequences include store traffic restriction and goods being detained.
UL Report ≠ UL Certification
UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, a globally authoritative safety testing organization. ul test report: A qualified test file issued by a third-party laboratory with ISO17025/CNAS qualifications, after testing a full set of safety items for lighting and home appliances according to US UL safety standards. It is equivalent to a North American safety physical examination report for the product and is only used for online platform listing reviews. Many merchants cannot distinguish between a UL report and a complete UL Listed certification.
Understand the core differences with one table:
Note: Online cross-border e-commerce only requires a UL test report, without the need to apply for expensive UL certification. Only if you are laying out offline supermarkets, physical channels, or need the product to bear the UL logo, do you need a full set of UL certifications. Do not be misled by service providers into spending extra money.
Different categories correspond to completely different standards. If the standard is mismatched, the report is directly invalidated, and the listing will be 100% rejected.
Fixed Lighting (Ceiling lights, downlights, panel lights, high bay lights): UL1598 + matching LED driver UL8750 (Both must be complete)
Portable Plug-in Lighting (Desk lamps, floor lamps): UL153
LED Bulbs, Candle Bulbs: UL1993 + UL8750
Christmas String Lights, Decorative Strip Lights: UL588; Low-voltage DC Strip Lights: UL2108
Plant Grow Lights: ul8800
LED Drivers, Power Adapters: UL8750 / UL62368-1
General Kitchen and Lifestyle Small Appliances (Humidifiers, coffee makers, juicers): UL60335 Series
Dedicated for Electric Fans: ul507; Space Heaters: UL1278
Personal Care Appliances (Hair dryers, hair straighteners): ul859
Electrothermal Appliances (Heating pads, warming equipment): ul499
All tests revolve around three core aspects: protection against electric shock, fire prevention, and overheating fire prevention. Platforms will verify the full set of test data; reports with only simplified tests are directly invalid:
Electrical Safety: Withstand voltage test, leakage current, insulation performance, short-circuit protection, grounding continuity.
Thermal Safety: Whole-machine temperature rise test, abnormal overload high-temperature simulation test.
Fire and Flame Retardance: Enclosure plastic ul94 flame retardant rating, glow-wire test.
Mechanical Structure: Wire pulling force, anti-tip structure, enclosure impact resistance strength.
Data Compliance: Compliance verification of product nameplates, warning statements, and label identifiers.
The review mechanisms of Amazon and Temu are strict. The following conditions are indispensable. Self-check to avoid listing removal:
Laboratory Qualifications: The report must be stamped with dual ISO17025 + CNAS qualification seals. Reports issued by unqualified institutions will not be recognized by the platform.
Exact Model Match: The model, power, LED driver, and enclosure material in the report must be completely consistent with the product in the store Listing. After replacing accessories or redesigning, the product must be retested.
Complete Test Items: A full set of safety tests is required. Key items cannot be omitted to create a simplified version of the report.
Unique Verifiable Number: Each report has an independent number, and the platform backend can trace and verify its authenticity.
Confirm Product Category: Match the corresponding UL standard, and the laboratory will issue a precise quote.
Submit Basic Information: Business license, product specifications, BOM (Bill of Materials), circuit schematic diagram, and product nameplate.
Send Samples: Send 1-2 complete finished product prototypes to the laboratory (with original driver and wires).
Conduct Testing: The laboratory completes the full set of safety tests according to the corresponding UL standard.
Issue Report: Upon passing the test, an electronic report with qualification stamps will be issued, which can be directly uploaded to the platform backend to complete the review.
The UL report remains valid long-term under the premise that the product structure, driver power supply, enclosure plastic material, and power parameters are not changed.
As long as there are redesigns, driver replacements, model changes, or internal component adjustments, it is mandatory to retest and issue a new report.
