ul4200A is a mandatory safety standard formally implemented by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in the United States in September 2022. The standard was developed in response to statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which show over 3,500 annual emergency cases of children accidentally swallowing button batteries.
This standard applies not only to lithium button batteries with a diameter ≤32mm (such as CR2032/CR2025) but also to consumer electronics using these batteries, including smartwatches, toys, and remote controls.
Notably, the European Union has simultaneously updated the EN 60086-4:2023standard, creating a global compliance linkage with UL4200A.
Test Details:Two groups of tests are requiRED:
① Children aged 4–5:≤3 out of 20 children can open the package within 5 minutes.
② Seniors aged 50–70:90% of participants must be able to open the package within 1 minute (ensuring accessibility).
Typical Compliance Solution:Use blister packaging (compliant with 16 CFR 1700.20) or a screw-cap with torque ≥0.6 N·m.
New Mechanical Test Items:
① 3-Axis Drop Test:Drop from a height of 1.2 m onto a concrete surface, once for each face/edge/corner.
② 30-Second Continuous Compression Test:Apply ≥100 N force to the weakest point of the battery compartment.
Innovative Design Case:Medical device manufacturers use ultrasonic welding combined with tamper-resistant screws for dual fixation.
Multilingual Requirements Example:
① U.S. market: English and Spanish required
② EU market: Must cover 24 official languages
Icon Standards:Hazard symbols must follow ISO 7010-W001 templates, with a size ≥5% of the main display area of the packaging.
New Extreme Test Conditions:
① Short-circuit test after storage for 7 days at 85°C/85% RH.
② Leakage inspection after temperature cycling between -40°C and 60°C.
① In-Depth Analysis:CPSC recall data in 2023 showed that 37% of failures were due to opening force >15 N, making it difficult for elderly users.
② Advanced Solution:Use “push-pull” child-resistant containers (e.g., HDPE material, opening force 8–12 N).
Engineering Verification:Optimize latch stress distribution via FEA simulation and recommend POM material (flexural modulus ≥2,800 MPa).
Automated Solution:Implement a variable data printing (VDP) system to manage one-item-one-code multilingual labels.
