Data cables and adapters exported to the EU and the US are subject to mandatory testing and certification, including CE (EU) and FCC (US), supplemented by common certifications such as RoHS and California Proposition 65.
The ce marking is the mandatory market access requirement in the EU, which must comply with three key directives and corresponding standards.
• Applicable to: Electronic accessories operating at 50V1000V AC / 75V1500V DC (including data cables and adapters)
• Mandatory tests: Insulation resistance, withstand voltage (≥2000V), temperature rise, mechanical strength, protection against electric shock, flammability
• Standards:
○ EN 62368-1 (replaces EN 60950-1; mandatory for the EU and e-commerce platforms)
○ EN 60884-1 (plugs / adapters)
• Mandatory tests: Conducted disturbance, radiated disturbance, harmonics, electrostatic discharge (±8kV), immunity
• Standards: en 55032, EN 55035, en 61000-3-2
• Mandatory restriction of 10 hazardous substances: Lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE, phthalates, etc.
• Limits:
○ Lead ≤ 0.1%
○ Cadmium ≤ 0.01%
• Requires both raw material and finished product test reports
The US enforces federal mandatory (FCC) + state mandatory (California Proposition 65) compliance.
• Applicable to: All live data cables / adapters (unintentional radiators)
• Mandatory standard: fcc part 15B
• Tests: Conducted emissions, radiated emissions
Certification Routes:
• Standard models: fcc sdoc (Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity) – test reports retained by the company
• Wireless / custom chip models: fcc id (certified by a TCB)
• Applicable to: Products sold in California (the largest consumer market in the US)
• Mandatory testing for carcinogenic and reproductive toxic substances: Lead, cadmium, phthalates, etc.
• Requirement: A warning label must be attached if limits are exceeded; failure may result in heavy fines.
• CE (LVD + EMC + RoHS)
• Wireless versions: RED
• Mandatory: FCC (Part 15B), California Proposition 65
• EU: RoHS alone ≠ ce compliance; LVD and EMC must also be passed.
• US: FCC is the legal minimum; UL / USB-IF is often required for online marketplace listing.
• Test bodies: Must use EU Notified Bodies (CE), FCC-accredited laboratories, and UL-authorized laboratories.
